XP: If you've been to Costa Rica...
can you give me some details on what part of country, where you stayed, cost of trip, review of trip, things you wouldn't miss out on and things you'd definitely skip? I'd like to start planning a trip for H & I.
Re: XP: If you've been to Costa Rica...
I went in High School as part of an Ecology trip. We stayed in the rainforest, which was awesome! I don't remember all of the exact details but I know we were in Tortuguero. Here's a website with some info no the area. http://www.tortugueroinfo.com/
We flew into San Jose and took a bus for awhile. We then took a river transfer boat for a few hours up the river to Tortuguero. Ours was an "educational" trip so we spent a lot of time doing experiments in the rainforest, cleaning the beaches and bringing supplies/money to a local elementary school. We also got to see the sea turtles, which was really neat.
If you have any specific questions, I'm sure I could track down the info from my old HS.
Have fun!

I've been two different times. We have stayed on the Pacific Ocean side both times at the following hotels: Allegro Papagayo by Occidental and Paradisus Playa Conchal. I would recommend the second hotel. You can book an all-inclusive trip through Apple Vacations or Vacation Express. They both have websites. The prices were reasonable.
Our favorite excursion was the Zip Line tour. You have got to do this!
Just got back from my HM there
We had a great time, even in September which is supposedly the "rainy" season. We went to Arenal Volcano (La Fortuna) and stayed at Arenal Nayara Hotel. Great hotel and service! We didn't get to see much of the volcano because it was really cloudy but we did hike the waterfall in La Fortuna and went to the Eco Thermales hot spring. Tabacon is the big destination hot spring but we decided to go cheaper and lower key and it was great!
After two nights we went to Monteverde Cloud Forest. It's a lot of gravel road and you need to rent to 4 wheel drive vehicle. We only spent one night but I really loved it there. We went on the canopy tour at Selvatora Park, coffee tour at Don Jaun and a hike with a guide at the Monteverde Forest. We stayed at the Rustic Lodge which was a little out of the main downtown area but really nice (no AC but it's cooler in Monteverde anyway). From there we went to Mal Pais and Santa Teresa which I would skip unless you are surfers. It was a nice laid back town but you have to take a ferry and bad road to get there. Probably would try another beach town that was easier to get to.
After three nights there we went to Manuel Antonio which you have to stop at for the wildlife alone. There are nice beaches there as well. It is touristy and busy and the park is closed on Mondays (we didn't know that). We stayed at the La Posada private beach bungalows which isn't as private as they make it sound but it was a great place to stay, right next to the park entrance. There is tons of wildlife in the park (we saw 9 different animals/lizards in an hour and a half). We took an ATV/Quad tour on Monday when the park was closed. It was a BLAST! There are tons of nice hotels and restaurants in Manuel Antonio - I enjoyed it.
We then ditched the car and went down to Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula by a little plane, which wasn't bad at all. We stayed four nights at the Aguila De Osa Inn where they feed your and take you on excursions. We went hiking and snorkeling and we took a night tour where we looked for bugs and other creepy crawly things. Sound gross but it was a highlight of our trip! If you feel like really getting into the jungle for a little while - this is where to do it!
We spend our last night in San Jose where we went to their big market and bought some souveniers. This is the only place we got truly rained on.
Sorry this is so long. Needless to say we had a great HM. You can definitely travel there for less money, we spent more than we needed to since it was a special trip for us. If you have any questions, my email is ross344 at hotmail dot com. GL!
