Hi, I'm kind of a lurker on the Cincy boards... but I wanted to say I love your kitchen remodeling!

Would you mind if I ask you what company did it?

Would you recommend them? Did they help you with the design of it, or was it all your ideas?

Re: ** Christine.Louie **

  • Thank you so much - we love our new kitchen!  We used several people and yes, we recommend them all!  I had a lot of ideas and they built on them and brought it to life.  Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Kitchen Design and Cabinets - Kelly Bros (http://www.kellybros.com/default.php).  We were referred by Sharon from Ohio Tile (DH did some computer jobs for her).  We worked with Wayne and he was awesome at marrying our needs and budget.  Unlike the designers at your typical big box stores, Wayne actual has an architecture degree and so he thinks about the aesthetics and flow.  Also, unlike the other places we visited, he's old school and hand draws his designs with pencil and paper on blueprints.  This requires much more skill than just dragging and dropping cabinets using a computer program :).  I think I saw a high value coupon for cabinets in one of the recent Reach magazines.

Tile and Granite - Ohio Tile (www.ohiotile.com).  Sharon helped us (see above for how we know her) and cut us an awesome deal for granite and tumbled stone.  She helped suggest granite colors to match our cabinet and flor colors then helped pick tile for our backsplash.  I designed the layout of the backsplash based on pictures from work they'd previously done.

Floors and Floor Installation - Floors by Shaw (www.floorsbyshaw.com).  Adam did a great job.  They also did some of the floors in this year's homearama homes.  I also saw a coupon in the most recent Reach magazine...I think for 20% off labor.

Installation - Corbin Custom Remodelers (http://www.corbinbuilders.com).   Not the cheapest but still reasonable for their level of experience.  Since contractors are hungry for work we got a pretty good bid (hourly rate is 25% less than when things were good).  A very quality and timely job.  They were ahead of schedule and everything turned out great.

Lighting - Lighting Efx (www.lightingefx.com).  So many different light choices its almost overwhelming!

  • Thank you so much!

Did you also get new kitchen electrics (fridge, oven, etc.)? Were you able to score any good deals online or at a retailer?

  • Oh yeah.  We gutted the whole kitchen...literally starting on the day of closing!  All of our appliances came from Hagedorn (4432 Dixie Hwy, Erlanger, KY - (859) 342-6060).

Wayne called them and told them he was sending us so they gave us "the best" (ie: contractor) pricing.  I think on average it was 20% off their normal pricing and we had a manufacturer rebate on top of that.  Apparently Kelly Bros, Corbin, Ohio Tile, and Hagedorn frequently work together so it was kind of a domino effect based on our relationship with Sharon haha.  We worked with Steve at Hagedorn in KY.  We later found out that they also own the Maytag Store in Deerfield if that's more convenient (though, KY tax is slightly lower!)

We liked that we were supporting local family owned businesses :)

  • So, did you have to look and decide on all the difference appliances, light fixtures, etc., or did you hire an interior designer to help you with that?
  • Nope, did it all on our own.  Appliances were pretty easy...we just wanted all stainless steel and for the fridge we knew we wanted counter depth (just looks so much nicer!) french door style and there were like 2 options.  For the lights I looked at the showroom examples, talked to the lady there (forget her name...) and she suggested some ideas.  We ordered our lighting based on a picture.    For colors it was literally dragging around cabinet door, granite, tile samples and paint chips lol.
  • Oh and just wanted to say that I follow your blog on my google reader and all your stuff looks so delicious!!
  • Thanks so much (for all the info, and for the compliments on my blog) :)
