TTC & Disability Ins ??

So MH & I are TTC.  We have only been trying for 2 months (and really just counting days for 1 month), but nonetheless, no BPF yet.  I have health insurance, but no disability insurance.  My company though just started offering disability ins.  I can join but it won't go into affect at the earliest until next paycheck, making miss ovulating this month.

What would you do?  I don't really want to wait in case we have trouble conceiving, but on the other hand, I am also concerned that if I have any complications & have to be out of work longer than expect.

Most of the women in my family have worked up until the day they went into labor, but I do have one cousin who had a lot of issues and was on bedrest for awhile.

Obviously, this is a very personal decision, but I love the knottie input!  Thanks!

Re: TTC & Disability Ins ??

  • first, good luck  :)

you should check to see if pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition.  I think for group health plans it can't be, but I'm not quite sure how disability insurance works it out.

Also, check your disability plan - I know many don't kick in and pay out for a year.

  • Congrats on TTC.  Since you've just started I say take a small break and go for the Disability Insurance so that should you need it once your KU, you'll have it.  Does it have a clause or something on how long it has to be in effect before you're KU?
  • The rep I talked to said there was no waiting period, but you had to have the ins (premiums paid) before you were pg. even if you didn't know you were pg, it would still be considered a pre-exsisting condition once they figured out the conception date.

I know I should wait...it is just a bummer. Sad

     thanks for your opinions!

  • Oh interesting...I didn't even know they did that (consider it pre-existing condition even before you find out that you're pregnant). Yeah, if that's the case, it might be worth the wait...but nonethless, I just wanted to say GL TTCing!

I agree with this. I know that waiting one cycle can seem like forever, but it would make me very nervous to potentially not be covered.
