Why I hate going home. Long.

My H and I grew up in a relatively small town in Western MA. I hate going home because a) people still haven't realized that HS is over and b) there isn't anything to do but stand around and stare at each other with a bottle of booze between us.

Last night, after driving almost 3 hours to get back here to visit our parents, we went out because SIL was in town and wanted us to. I've come to realize that either I'm waaaaay too judgy, or people here are just ridiculous.

1. I have a friend who is engaged (no wedding date set) who is 24 and trying to get pregnant. They live in a 1 bedroom apartment with no plans to move. She told me she is charting because they "don't have time to sleep together" and just wants to get "it" over with. Say whaaaa? If you don't have time to have sex, how are you going to find the time to raise another human being? She then also told me she suspected her FI of "doing something he shouldn't be" with one of his coworkers. Yes, then having a baby is EXACTLY what you should do.

2. I have another friend who got married last year who is buying a house.  And I know this because everything we talked about had to revolve around it.  No matter the conversation. Ex #1: I was talking about getting a dog.  Her response? I can't wait to get a dog when we get out house so it has a nice big back yard to play in! Ex #2: Another friend was talking about health insurance. Her response? It's OK for us because of the $8k tax break from buying our house! Ex #3: I mentioned I wanted to get a new car because of my commute, and something that does well in the snow since last winter I got into an accident blah blah blah.  Her response? I can't wait to get a new car too, since the new house has a garage and I can park it in there! Ex #4: Other friend started talking about grad school and how excited she was to be out of the dinky town we lived in (she had taken a year off and moved back in with her parents).  Her response? Town isn't so bad, I mean, we wouldn't have bought a house here if it was that bad, etc etc etc.

3. H and I went to rival high schools. This is still a big deal. People just "can't believe you two actually got married". Yes, because our dating for 6 and 1/2 years and deciding we'd be cool with staying together til we died is apparently not OK.

4. Our senior year of HS, his football team beat my football team in a pretty big battle. We were both undefeated at that point, his team won by a touchdown, yadda yadda. I was the captain of the cheerleading squad (shock), he was a football player. One of his old teammates came up to us to remind me that our team lost in the epic game of '03. Yes, that's right. 2003. Ya know, SIX YEARS AGO. He nudged me saying "Remember how cold it was? But we still won that game, baby!" and trying to get my H to give him a high five.

I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET BACK TO BOSTON TOMORROW WHERE I CAN PRETEND THAT I DONT KNOW ANY OF THESE EFFING PEOPLE.

I'm friends with everybody in this office. We're all best friends - I love everybody here. But sometimes your best friends start coming into work late, and start having dentist appointments that aren't dentist appointments. And that's when it is nice to let them know that you can beat them up.

Re: Why I hate going home. Long.

  • I feel for you. Your little town sounds just like mine!
  • This is funny, especially the annoying girl with the house.  My home town is kinda like that too - everyone knows each other and no one ever leaves.  I hate going home because people come up and say "hi Desiree" and I'm all like "Who the hell are you?"
  • Yikes. No wonder you hate going home. It would be hard not to wipe the WTF look off my face if I was in that situation. Some people who don't leave their hometowns (and I'm not judging that -- I still live in my home city) are stuck in some kind of time warp trying to ride out their glory days of high school. It's sad.

  • That is hilarious to me, especially the part about the football game.  Maybe I don't get it because I moved from one big city (Chicago) to another big city (Los Angeles) and pretty much all of my friends moved, too, so even when I go back I don't see anyone.  I can't imagine still living in high school memories.  At the time it didn't bother me so much, but as soon as I graduated and went to college I thought "Whew!  Am I glad that's over!"
  • If it weren't true/annoying for you, it'd just be hilarious.

I think I'm adding this to my book. This and KB's SIL. And cdobs wedding dramas.

  • I"m right there with ya - I also grew up in a tiny town where everyone knows everyone and their business. I haven't been back since Christmas 2007 and I really do not plan on going back.
