Is $82 a lot...

...for alterations for a bridesmaid dress? I'm in my MOH's wedding in November, got my dress in the mail yesterday and took it to get it altered today. I was kind of surprised that it cost so much for alterations. There's no beading or anything and it's really just hemming the bottom and taking it in the b00b-age area.

Re: Is $82 a lot...

  • I'm not an expert, but that sounds like a lot to me. A hem should only be about $10. I can't imagine that taking in the boobs would be $70.

You have another place you can go?

  • My SIL paid that much for her BM dress alterations for my wedding, and I was floored. I still feel guilty over it but she's 5 states away. My entire wedding dress alteration bill was $52 and I had a crapload done to it plus beading and lace work. See if you can get some word-of-mouth recs from friends - that's how I found my seamstress.

  • My hem alone was $40 so add that with the bewby area and I wouldn't be surprised at $82. Does seem like an awful lot for alterations at any rate...boo.
  • My alterations were ridiculous...for bustle, hem, taking in boob/side area, and steamming/pressing, is was almost $300.

Does the dress have boning in it? I didn't realize my bridesmaids' dresses did, and my MOH needed to have it taken in. They said it would either be over $100 if they had to remove the boning and resew it, or $60ish for hem/adding darts to take it in.

  • Unfortunately, I already pre-paid for it. It's the place I always go for alterations, and they're usually pretty reasonable which is why I was so shocked that it was so much, but I probably should've shopped around. I live in a fairly small town so there aren't many options. Here's the dress:

  • Those are my typical alterations and where I get them done (sticks of MA), its usually $50 or so.  If there is something fancy with the b00b area, not necessarily beading...maybe dealing with boning and seams and such, I can see them tacking on a little more.  Seems a little high, but not necessarily unreasonable.
