Question for moms for a friend

Her baby is a month older than mine (so 7 months) and she is getting pressure to stop giving her baby a bottle before bed.  So she wants to know what other new moms thought.  When did you stop giving the bedtime bottle?

Re: Question for moms for a friend

  • I breastfeed, so no bottles at all, but my son is 17 months and he still BFs before bed. We rock in his rocking chair and I sing him a song while he nurses.

I really don't understand where all these "deadlines" come from when dealing with babies. JMHO.

  • Wow, I have never heard of someone actually thinking that this should stop before bedtime. I have no advice but did they give her a reason why she should stop?
  • We only stopped giving DS a bottle before bedtime when he was around 1 yr old.

I've always heard that even though most babies over the age of 6 months old are already eating solids, the breastmilk or formula is still their main source of nutrition.  The solids they are eating are just to supplement their intake. Therefore, I see no reason why she would want to stop a bottle before bedtime, other than that it may be bad for the LO's teeth if they are being put to bed after a bottle without brushing their teeth.

  • I think that's pretty bad advice.  Both DDs have been bottle fed and Betty is right, breast milk or formula is the baby's main source of nutrition until a year at the very least.  DD1 didn't drop her bedtime bottle until closer to 15 months.
  • Thanks ladies I will tell her.

  • Are you sure the doctor wasn't just telling her "no letting them go to bed with a bottle?"

I know that you shouldn't put baby to bed with a bottle, something about early tooth decay, but you should always offer a bottle or breast before bed. Dani always has breastmilk before bed, it's part of her routine.

  • Apparently her family is telling her that it's spoiling the baby.  I dunno.  She asked if I still gave Scarlett one.
