day care references - what questions should I ask?

We are looking into a few home day cares for when I go back to work in 3 weeks. The home day care providers we are considering have given us a few references to contact. What kinds of questions should I ask them?

Re: day care references - what questions should I ask?

  • I wish I could help you but we just interviewed the centers, not any references.  Have you posted on the national boards?  That's where I got my questions to ask the daycare provider.

  • The only questions I could think to ask are pretty basic

    What has been your experience?

What do you love/like most about _____?

What do you dislike the most about ______?

Do you wish anything were different?

What benefit do you feel your child(ren) receive from ______ over another DC?

  • Are you licensed by the state?

Can I drop by anytime without notice? If it applies - can I come by to breast feed the baby.

How many infants/toddlers/kids do you have at any one time.

    Do you have an assistant?

Do you have pets. Do they come around the kids.

Do you or anyone in you house smoke.

Who lives in this house. Will they be helping with/around the children?

What do you charge if I'm late?

    Where do the kids sleep?

Whats your vacation policy. If you take vacation/If I take vacation policy.

My mom does daycare I will see if she can think of anything else.

    Questions for the references?

How long has your child been at this facility?

Have you ever had any concerns about the care your child receives?

Do the care providers address your concerns in a timely manner?

That's all I can think of.
