Or some other elective sight corrective operation?
I'd really love to have it done, especially before we start trying for child #2, but besides being chicken, I don't feel justified in spending the money.
If you have had it done - what is your experience?
Re: Has anyone gotten Lasik?
My mom had it done about 5 years ago. She likes it, generally, however, she finds that after the surgery, she really doesn't prefer to drive at night or in the rain. She said the halos from the lighting along the road or other cars makes it hard to see. She is also mad because she's in her early 50's, and is starting to have "age related vision issues" and the lasik didn't help with that. hehe So at some point, she'll be back to reading glasses, or something similar.
Since I already have "halo" issues at night, my eye doctor recommended I not look into it. He said it would make it worse....and it's already bad!
That being said, plenty of people like it. I have friends who've had it and love the freedom it provides. I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous of them.
Sorry I'm so late on this. I hadn't been around much recently.
I haven't had it done myself, but I'm also considering it in the future. I have not been a canidate because my vision is still slipping, ugh.
However, I did go to a demonstration before my mom had it done. You'll want to research the doctor you go to carefully. Get references, and ask a lot of questions. Cheaper is not better for this procedure. http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-tough-questions.htm.
My mom hasn't had any side effects. The first week was pretty rough for her because she had to travel to AZ for work. Flying, followed by a dry climate, so soon after the surgery was not a good combo. She had done the monovision thing in contacts for years before (they undercorrect one eye for distance so that she doesn't need reading glasses) and had her lasik done the same way. She doesn't have the night halos.
DH had it done too, along with his mom and sister. They went to Dr. Schein. DH does have issues with halos, and uses reading glasses now because his eyes overcorrected. But overall, he's still glad he did it. If I decide to do it, I'll probably go back to my mom's doctor in Ohio.
It is expensive, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't feel justified. Only you can decide if the difference in quality of life will be worth it. All of the contact lenses and glasses I've bought over the years aren't cheap either, so I'd weigh the cost against that. Contact lenses have been a challenge for me because I get recurring styes on my eyelids. The only way I've been able to wear them without that is to use the Night & Day type. Night & Days cost a LOT more and carry more risk for corneal infections.
