Midwives

Has anyone used a midwife?  I am thinking about getting one because I am delivering at a learning hospital and don't want 20 thousand people in the room.  Is it covered by OHIP?  Also, do I just do my monthly visits with them, or do I still see the dr?

Re: Midwives

  • I love my midwife (although, obviously, I haven't given birth yet!).

I started seeing my midwife at 10 weeks.  I saw her monthly until 28 weeks, then bi-weekly until 34-35 weeks, and now weekly.

Midwives are covered by OHIP.  You can only have a midwife or an OB.  If there are complications, your midwife would transfer you to an OB.

  • I had midwives.  Best decision I ever made.  (My doctor was the one who gave me the final nudge to go in that direction!)  Nice long appointments. They come to your house while you're in labour.  Are there every minute at the hospital (if you choose to transfer at all.)  They do home visits after the birth.

I want to get pregnant again just so I can see my midwives again! lol.  The care I received was *phenomenal*.  I always felt sorry for my friends seeing OBs.  Short appointments where they didn't have time to have their concerns be addressed...  didn't even see the dr at the hospital till they started pushing...  had nurses coming into their homes that they'd never met before.   Not that any of this is horrible, it just was so different than what I experienced.  There was nothing better than getting a big hug from my MW and having her sit and REALLY listen.  For as long as it took.  Especially post partum..

  • We used midwives and we loved them. It was such an amazing experience. I would hurry up and call. When I called at 5w I was put onto a waiting list. They fill up really fast.
