"Good crimes"

I was talking to a fellow student yesterday about how sick she was reading some of the criminal law cases and what people do. She said she didn't understand why people commit crimes - murder, rape, robbery, etc. But then she said, "I mean, I can understand if a mother steals food to feed her children. That's justifiable." WDYT?

I completely disagree, and told her so. I can empathize with the desperation to feed your children, but what happens when you are caught and arrested? What example are you setting for your children? Granted, I've never been there, but there are programs for that stuff. Not just welfare/food stamps, but SVdP kitchen, food bank, etc.

Re: "Good crimes"

  • Hmm, velly interesting...

My initial reaction was to agree with the other student.  I think that's b/c my first thought went to the first few days after Katrina hit and people literally had no choice but to steal food.  I can't say I wouldn't have done to same thing.  Obviously I'm referring to necessities and not tv's.  And that was an extreme situation.

But you make a very valid point.  As a parent, it is my job to mold my children into good, upstanding citizens and how does that look if you are stealing from others?  Especially when, like you said, there are other options out there.  No one wants to have to depend on gov't assistance (at least not anyone I know) but at the end of the day, I would do what needed to be done to provide for my family.  Even if I had to sacrifice my pride.

On another slightly related note, I sometimes watch L&O (which is oh so real) and they'll arrest a parent who murdered to protect their child.  And I find it hard to disagree with that.  I would not think twice about murdering someone who hurt my kids.  (that means you, creepy internet stalker man!)

  • I love L&O reruns! I often find myself hoping the defendant gets acquited even though he or she blatantly broke the law. I guess I suffer from moral relativism.

There are plenty of crimes that are not really wrong IMO. Just like there are many things that are perfectly legal yet completely reprehensible. It's a sea of grey out there, Jen.

  • I agree with you Jenn. I actually do have two students whose parents are in jail for stealing stuff (not sure what though), and now they're in foster care. (I have many more students whose parents are in jail for other things, I just know of those two for stealing). The kids talk about how they hear jail is not so bad, and you "gotta do what you gotta do..." Definitely not the best examples.

  • Cissy - Agreed. Lots of gray. That's why I'm asking what you think about the topic. I really like seeing the view point of others. Give me something to think about. So, do you think it's okay for a mother to steal food to feed her children?

    What are the circumstances?

  • Shoe - any circumstances, Hurricane Katrina excluded. With all stores/food banks closed and/or flooded, not many options existed.

What circumstances are acceptable? What circumstances are not?

  • Are you also reading Les Miserables? Jean Val Jean steals a loaf of bread to feed his sister's child and goes to jail.

Stealing is stealing except in the most extreme of circumstances, like Katrina.

I agree with what MT said here. No, it's never ok to steal, even food, except in situations like Katrina.

I'm reading David Copperfield right now. He went without rather than stealing, so he's not a good example. But, things were very different back then. In the setting of that book, I could probably think of a few situations where it would be ok.
