Observation

re: "Good Crimes"; the more liberal members of the board seem to be anti-stealing in all instances while the more conservative members of the board are willing to bend the rules depending on circumstances.

Thoughts?

Re: Observation

  • I wonder if the more liberal persons believe in a society that takes care of the indigent and children, so in theory there should be no reason to steal food to feed one's child.

  • Interesting theory. It makes sense.

  • Ok, hold the phone, Donkeys.  I never said stealing was ok.  Just that in extreme circumstances I understood it.  As a conservative, I believe that only I can be responsible for my family.  I don't depend upon others to take care of my kids.

Bottom Line:  Would I steal to feed my kids as opposed to standing in the food stamp line?  No.

Although said more eloquently than I would have been able to come up with, this is what I was thinking.

  • Aw, Shoe! I'm sorry if you are offended. I didn't say you think stealing is okay. Looking at your response and your request for circumstances, it seems like you're willing to bend the rules more than I. Maybe that means you're just a great person and willing to help and I'm just a biotch ;)

  • I guess that before I judge someone, I try to understand where they are coming from (don't die from shock, it's the truth).  While I don't condone law breaking at all (except for driving in the left lane; I break that law daily), I would at least hear someone out before immediately jumping to conclusions.

  • I agree with the the statement that there is a lot of grey with the question. Did the mother steal because she truly had no other alternative or because she thought she had no other alternative or it was easiest?
This is a particualrly loaded question due to the economic environment our nation is currently experiencing.

This is exactly what I meant.  It's hard to make a judgment call when we don't know the hypothetical circumstances.

MT, I can always depend on you to be the voice of reason.  :)

  • I think in a state of emergency or panic, a human's primal and basic instinct to protect their lives and the lives of their family kicks in. Reason, logic, and intelligent thought are pretty much out the window. Only in extreme situations could I understand stealing, not approve of it, but understand it.
  • I wasn't really referring to the stealing for food question with my response. It was more of a general attitude towards life. The stealing for food scenario never really works for me because it's not a reality in our society today. There are countless ways to get your basic needs met.

I was thinking of things like dr assisted suicide in terminal cases. It's not legal, but in some very dire cases, I think it's acceptable. I also agree with both of Shoe's examples.

Sorry, I'll stick to the topic next time.
