Yeah, this totally trumps the possum in my backyard.
I was driving to work this morning and I saw a full-fledged, legit COYOTE walking along the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle. He walked out of the bushes, and at first I thought "Oh no, a dog on the highway." Then I looked again and thought "That is NOT a dog!" He looked like he was going to walk right out into traffic, then got spooked and ran back into the bushes.
For those of you who don't know Westchester, New Rochelle is about a 15 minute drive from the Whitestone or Throgs Neck bridges. About 5 minutes outside of the Bronx. This was right near my old office, which was exactly 16 miles from my door in Queens. So, we are not talking woodlands here. It's a regular residential neighborhood.
This is what he looked like:

Re: Um...I saw a coyote...
Yowza! I'm from the land of coyotes (NM) and i've only seen *one* there! (almost hit one late at night...it was was walking around my parents neighborhood...)
He/she must be in need of food if it's coming this close to people!!

I always see deer wandering along the highway while driving to work, but I don't know that they hunt deer? I think they go more for smaller animals. Well, there are PLENTY of groundhogs in New Rochelle as well. And wild turkeys, I see those while driving through the Bronx all the time.
Who knew the Hutch was such a nature preserve!
No, but seriously it was pretty much in my old boss's backyard! She lives right off of the Hutch - her house backs onto North Ave., which runs directly next to the Hutch! I texted her when I got to work with "OMG, you have a coyote almost in your backyard!"
Mrs. Kocal--this coyote sighting has me really spooked! I live in Throgs Neck, right across from the Eastchester Bay, but I've been to New Rochelle. Just in Throgs Neck alone, there are racoons, possums, skunks, and I swear a bird species similar to the Bronx Zoo, lurking around. Neighbors say because of residences, surrounded by water encourages the animals to lurk more for food amongst us.
I had become so concerned about the surrounding wild kingdom, that DH gave me a flashlight to use since I get home before him and it's dark now by the time I get home. Plus, despite sensor lights, it's very dark around the entrance to our apartment without our porch light on, and I'm constantly looking for these animals and stray cats before even approaching my door!
How crazy is it that growing up in the midwest, I've never seen so many animals running rampant until I moved to NY! But, unfortunately, that could because some people readily hunted these animals and took care of them. So, I feel like forget Halloween mayhem--these animals are enough to scare the crap out of me!
Wow - that's crazy that he was so close to the city and a major road!
I think coyotes are mostly scavengers, aren't they? I'd be surprised to hear that one took down a deer! I'd bet that they're more in to peoples' trash, etc....

MsWifey, don't be concerned - apparently coyotes only go after smaller animals, like racoons, groundhogs, Jessica Simpson's Maltese....
They can only take down a deer if they are in a pack, and I doubt there will ever be a whole pack of coyotes hunting in the city!
Doesn't a coyote show up in upper Central Park every now and again? When they start hitching rides on the garbage trucks to get to Long Island, then the mayhem will ensue with suburban pets in as much peril as they are in the hills around LA.
I saw my first one this year too--but way up in the Adirondacks, so just a slight bit less surprising.
