ok, so I work in an office with 4 other women plus the big boss man.
we all get along really well but let's just say we all come from different ends of the spectrum.
so usually when someones bday comes up, we put money together and get a gift card or something like that. (to me, gift cards get old and dontreally have much thought into it). anyway, back in August my coworker T. had a bday on like the 7th, she never mentioned it to any of us, and she wasnt even there that day which was a friday. so that monday morning, we get an email from her saying "thanks yall for forgetting my birthday" (i was kinda ticked cuz she never mentioned it to us) it is not my job to remember anyones bday. so, coworker C. comes in with a gift and a cake for T. and i had ordered something for her at the fun party at Shoe's house. So, to me, we all redeemed ourselves.
flash forward to the past few days.
it was C.' s bday this past weekend, so i emailed everyone including the big boss because C is like his right hand. i said hey, yall wanna put in a few bucks to get her a gift. so, coworkers J and L give me $10cash each and coworker T give me a check for $10 (which i have sitting in my wallet still).
I knew exactly what to get the bday girl because it is something she has mentioned before that she wanted sooo badly!
so I go towalmart on my saturday afternoon, with the kids in tow, I buy the gift which was a Hot Pink Caboodle (remember those!) that said it was $22.88 and got the gift bag, tissue, and also went get the cake mix, icing and pan to baker her favorite cake for monday morning. oh and the caboodle rang up at like 14.88 instead.
so, in all it ended up costing just under $30.
Monday coems around and the big boss tells me he is sorry he forgot to give me money and will go get some from his car. i told him i had enough and it was ok. but he insisted to get some and he asked if i had to use any of my own money (not sure why he asked) i told him only a few dollars. he came back and handed me a $10 bill. which is currently in my desk drawer. for some reason he told me he didnt want me to spend my own money.
well, this morning, coworker T asks me if the big boss gave me any money and i said yes he handed me a $10 bill. she was like, oh, did you give that to C? since her gift was cheap? (i never told her how much it was and she is VERY stingy when it comes to money)
and C loved loved loved her gift! she and I are BFFs and she knows how much thought i put into it.
so to me, it seems as if T either thinks there was too much cash, or that i should give her some back, or i should have gotten a more expensive gift. I told C how the big boss gave me the extra money and she was like, awesome! it pays for your gas and your trouble going shopping for this.
anyway, if you are still reading this, what should i do with the extra money? or the uncashed check? since T keeps questioning me. my thing is that she wouldnt go out of her way to put thought in a gift or bake a cake or whatever on her day off. oh and since T's bday was forgotten, i have been appointed the bday reminder gift getter for everyone now, which is really annoying at this point.
Re: Dilemma WWYD? (a little long)
Did you tell her the caboodle only rang up at the 14 instead of the 22?
If you didn't then really I would just ignore her. I mean even with your boss giving you the extra 10 the time it took for you to go get the stuff and bake a cake is worth it that you didn't have to put in for your 10.
But maybe with that 10 you and C can go get Starbucks or something. Then when T asks you can say yah I bought her Starbucks with it.
I would still cash the check because T wasn't the one that planned anything.

We have a small group too, and always do things for birthdays and other special events like babies and graduations. If someone did all of the shopping and the baking, then I'd be more than happy to pay that person's share. H*ll, that's the hard part!
I think T needs to take her bad attitude and shove it. Though that is a very sweet idea to buy lunch or coffee for C next time you guys are out.
I agree with Ali - tell T to stuff it.
