Re: Does anyone know when/if Verizon will offer iPhone?

  • I don't think they will.  AT&T and Apple have an exclusive arrangement. :-(
  • there was some hub bub about it earlier this year, but i haven't heard anything lately.

  • The exclusive is just through 2010, I think, and Verizon is the biggest carrier in the US, so it wouldn't be too surprising if there was eventually some sort of deal.  Who knows, though, since Verizon doesn't usually get the new cool stuff!
  • Its currently under investigation for antitrust (ATT's exclusive contract).  Who knows when a decision will be made.  I hope that Verizon does get Iphone.  The ATT network is not capable of handling all of the Iphone users and therefore I have crappy service.  Verizon may NOT want the Iphone however.  Iphone users use up lots (don't quote me, but I think it was 50% more) more data bandwidth than normal smartphone users.
  • The exclusivity agreement ends in June 2010, and at this point no one knows if it will be extended.
  • I have been researching this like mad! I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for Verizon to get the iPhone, been with Verizon since my first cell phone.  We just switched to AT&T this last weekend.

     1) Verizon's network is CDMA right now.  They are working on a new network (LTE), which will be 4G that they plan to roll out in 2010 - rumor June.

     2) The contract between AT&T and Apple is exclusive for the iPhone they make for AT&T.  I believe they can get around the contract if they make a similar phone to work with Verizon's new network.

    3) Apple originally went to Verizon with the iPhone but they could not agree on a deal, so Apple went with AT&T instead.  I anticipate a long deal making process between Apple/Verizon once things are ready for that step.

    4) Another rumor, the first Apple gadget to run on the new LTE network is going to be a tablet.

Conclusion: we decided to switch to AT&T.  By the time two years goes by for our contract, LTE will be up and running and perhaps a 2nd generation of the Verizon iPhone will be available =)

  • The people at Verizon said maybe next year - but no guarantees.

  • I wouldn't hold my breath...
  • I think AT & T will try and hold out and keep the Iphone for as long as they can. I think as soon as it becomes available to other providers people will run from them.  I do hope Verizon eventually gets it.

One of the Apple Genius guys said the same thing. He said they have been hearing rumors for a while.

  • Rumor is January of 2010.

  • I'm not holding out for it.  My Verizon contract ends at the end of November and I plan to switch mostly since DH is already on AT&T.  I've never noticed any service problems, but maybe one day we could move back to Verizon.
