vent-mom-weird

ok totally random. i found out by accident (thru my aunt) that my mom had plastic surgery either right before or after i was born (so 30 years ago). Apparently this was something kept hush hush and only a few ppl in the family knew about it. Now my mom and i are bffs and tell each other everything, which is why my aunt assumed i knew and let it slip. I have been feeling really weird since i found out, like, why wouldnt she tell me? it's not a big deal but now it feels like a huge deal since she kept it from me.

overall i just wish i never found out. my aunt is gonna tell her she told me, but not till she sees her in person, which might not be for a few months since my parents moved away. (which has strained our realtionship this past year) i dunno, i just feel awkward and weird. and my mom and i are trying to work thru being so far apart and this does not help. Not really asking for help, but just needed to get it out.

anyone else find out some "family secret" year later?

  • I found out that the reason someone in my family got married was b/c she found out she was preggers.  Quicky wedding.

Maybe your mom doesn't even think about her surgery.  I mean it was probaby 25 or more years ago.  H has tattoos and he's said that sometimes he forgets they're there.

  • if it was 30 yrs ago, she probably does not even think about it.

  • Have you thought about just asking your mom?
  • My mom was in a "beauty pageant" (Miss VFW...hahaha) when she was like a junior or senior in high school.  My sister & I never knew about it until we came across the newspaper clipping one day.  My mother didn't and doesn't talk about it because she feels embarassed that she was in a pageant.  Maybe your mom feels the same way about the plastic surgery?
  • My mom was in a car accident years ago and needed surgery (bone chips in the sinus cavity) the doctor asked if she wanted him to fix the bump and anything else. She basically had a nose job and we all forgot about it until we were looking at pics to use for table numbers. It's not somethign that is thought of so maybe your mom didn't think hey i won't tell her. You were very young and she probably hasn't thought about it. Just say something to her becasue now you are the one hiding something you will probably feel better once it's out and you may inadvertantly act differently towards her. I know you didn't want advise sorry just my .02. Good luck whatever you decide.

  • Just an update. I have spoken to my mom several times on the phone, not discussing the surgery, and i think i'm fine. I think the bigger part was that when i was talking to my aunt we were discussing the fact that i miss my mom terribly since she has moved and when she "accidentally" told me i felt even more distant from her. it's been a rough two years to be so far from my parents (we have an amazing relationship) and the fact that the wedding was in that time as well made it even harder. So really i don't care about the surgery, just hated feeling so distant from my mom.

we try not to talk about missing each other too much becuase it just hurts us and we both already know how we feel. until my dad is able to retire, i think another 2 years, it's just a fact of life that they will live far away. thanks for listening. :)
