Name Change

Hello,

It's my first time here, I hope you can help me out. I'm a July07 bride, I want to change my name but since I'm applying to medical residency for 2009 and application already started ( a lot of paper work, all with my current name), I was wondering if I still can change it down the road.I guess my question is, is there a time frame to change you name once you are married??

Thanks

Re: Name Change

  • I don't think there is a time limit. My friend did not change hers until she was pregnant 2+ years after their wedding. As long as you have a marriage certificate, you should be able to do it.

  • I agree with pp.  And most schools will let you change the name on your diploma years later with proper paperwork. (I got my MS changed to "First Maiden Married" just to make it easier to connect the dots between education and work.)
  • There is no time frame, it just might cost more for some changes (like your passport), but since you are past the one year mark anyway it doesn't really make a difference if you do it now or later.

  • The passport you can only get the name changed for free during the first year after the issuance of the passport- not the first year after you change your name.

Mine expires next June- I'm not renewing it and changing the name until after we get back from a trip in Dec.  I'm not giving the government more money earlier than I need to Stick out tongue

I just changed my name with the graduate school- so my degree will have married name on it.

  • I still haven't gotten around to changing my name, although I do want to soon.  One of my friends has been married over 6 years and still hasn't finished changing her name on everything.  There is no time frame.

  • Ditto first poster, some of accounts & important docs still has my maiden name including my passport &  mortgage. I only got around to changing my name on the bank accounts, SS card, and Drivers License.
  • I have a friend who got married a couple of years ago and still hasn't changed her name legally.  She signs with her married name on most things and her mail uses her married name, but legally she's never changed it.  Most places don't even question her about it she said.  If your passport is over a certain age, you can't change your name on it for free anyway, so then the one year rule doesn't apply.  I had to get an entirely new one because mine was half way through its cycle.  I would suggest that if you change your passport that you get your DL changed also.  It is a LOT easier to travel abroad if they match.  You also must make sure the name on your plane ticket matches your ID.

As for school & my national certification and all that:  Currently it has my maiden name on it.  My cycle is up this Dec. and I saw no reason to pay extra for new documents with the married name last summer, when I'll get them "free" this year when I renew the cert. anyway.

I chose to hyphenate my middle name to: First Middle-Maiden Married and that has really eliminated a lot of problems since my full maiden name AND full married name is always there.
