Before I read too much into things I wanted to ask you all how would you read this?

Please remind me when the early start and expected start dates for your mat leave are? We'll ned to advertise and start the recruitment process about 2.5 months in advance, given prior experience.

  • I wouldn't take it in any way.  It just looks to me like they are trying to prepare for your replacement.  I don't pick up on any tone or anything like that, if that is what you are wondering.

    I do understand the difficulty of having someone replace you though.  I am really struggling with it these days.  Maybe you are just reading something into it because you are apprehensive about leaving?

    Is that what you mean or is there a specific part of it that you're questioning?

  • I don't see any issue here- it sounds to me like they want to know when you are eligible for mat leave (I believe it is 35 weeks pregnant, at the earliest, unless there are extenuating circumstances) and the date when you plan to take mat leave (ie, do you want to leave at that time, or are you going to work until your due date?). They want lots of notice so they can find a qualified replacement and train them properly.

    How do you read it?

  • I am not 100% clear on what you are asking.  It looks like they are just trying to be prepared to have someone take over your position while you are on mat. leave.  In my field 2.5 months, is not uncommon, as there is a huge learning curve.  But I am not sure if you are having to train someone.

  • It sounds like they're just trying to cover their bases. I would, however, make clear in any response that those dates are *flexible* and may change, in case you feel they might try and force you to leave as of a certain day.
  • I think you are reading into it too much, I gave my letter to my former employer 6 months before I went on mat leave (totally out of the norm, but my boss wanted to have a great candidate).  I simply stated that I would be working until X day unless my GP or OB were to revise this, or of course nature and I delievered early.  They had my replacement lined up two months before I left and she started two weeks prior to me leaving.  It was a nce break, I still had lots of my stuff to do but she took over all the easier office stuff.

  • I don't think I would take it badly either. They're just trying to be prepared from what I can tell, to make sure they have someone lined up to take your place when you're gone. I worked up until 2 weeks before my due date, and my boss had my replacement hired about a month before that.

  • My company knew I was pregnant right from the start, I didn't wait for the 3 months. IMO they have had lots of time to start looking for a replacement and now my manager is in Pakistan for 4 weeks, only when he returns will they place the ads. I'm 6 months now (I think) so add 4 weeks = 7 months, to only start the looking process and hiring and training within 2 months is going to be tough & stressful for me and the new person.

    The hardest part of my job is at month end, how can I train someone if they'll only be around for 2 'sessions'? Oh well - I'll do my best but then I feel bad for him/her. It took me 5 'sessions' top finally get it...

    Next time you do it, write out instructions. The following month, follow your instructions and see if you're missing anything. Then go through it with the new person (when they are hired). Hopefully they can "get it" within 1-2 sessions.

  • If they are unable to hire someone sooner, and that person does not get enough training as you had - it's their problem in the end, not yours. Sad, but true.

    My boss only starting looking for a maternity replacement for my colleague in June, and her mat leave started at the end of Aug. Miraculously he found someone quickly, but if he hadn't, the new person would have zero training.

    So, a little training is better than nothing! Sounds like they are being a little more pro-active though.

    You are 23w so in 4w you will be 27w and they will have 13w to find someone and have you train them (if you stay at work until you deliver - think of it in terms of weeks not months since it never adds up correctly when comparing months and weeks - you have 17w left which is way more than 3 months). Even if you only have 2 or 3 month end session to show them how to do things you could still do mock month ends to train them.

    Also, they probably want to know when you are leaving so they know when to offer a person a job. It wouldn't have made sense for them to start the hiring process prior to know because if your manager is the one responsible for the hiring and is now gone for 4 weeks then they would have had to do everything upfront and really who is going to apply for a job that doesn't start for several months? You have to think of it that way.

     

  • looks similar to what my company sent me, only they wanted to start recruiting 4+ months in advance.
