Question for the moms

I had a CW just tell me that after she had her kid, she lost a lot of hair. Apparently she use to have really thick hair but a lot of it fell out after she had her kid so her hair is a lot thinner now. She told me its a pretty common thing but I've never heard of it. Does that really happen?

Re: Question for the moms

  • I lost a ton of hair during my first trimester then lost a lot more after I had Sarah - it lasted almost a year (off and on).

Losing hair after giving birth is VERY common...I've talked to women who've had bald spot (thankfully I didn't have that).  My hair is still growing back!

It's not as common to lose it during pregnancy but it can happen.  I was really worried about and my doctor ran some tests to confirm nothing else was wrong. Guess I was just one of the "lucky" ones!

  • I didn't notice it falling out, but it def doesn't grow as quickly. :( Sucks, because I'm trying to grow it out too.
  • This doesn't answer your question but is similiar. When I worked at Motherhood I heard lots of interesting stuff and I was told quite often from lots of women about how while pregnant that their hair would go curly or vice versa, it would go straight while it normally was curly.

  • My hair was so thick and pretty during pregnancy. I loved it.

A few weeks after I had Mary it started falling out. I swore I was going to go bald. I was A TON of hair. But that has stopped.

BUT my hair is curly in the back now. My hair has always been straight and now in the back I have this wave thing that only goes away with a straightner. I never used to NEED the straightner. I actually never understood why I owned one. Now, I need it big time!!

  • During both my pregnancies my hair and nails were so healthy. Long and shiny. Than afterwards totally dull and falling out and just so blah. I can't even remember when it began to get better after Isabel.

I know it's more common with breastfeeding. It's also why you should continue taking your prenatals even after you give birth.

  • I didn't nitice anything, but my SIL 9who does my hair) noticed that it was thicker when I was pregnant. Also, I've recently noticed short hairs in the front. I thought it was breaking off from dyeing and heat, but she said that it is new growth, so I must have lost some. It's really common.
  • I didn't notice my hair falling out.

  • Wow interesting I had no idea. I'll have to ask my mom. I have pretty thick and naturally curly hair (although Ive been chemically straightening it for years now) so make me curious what will happen with me.
  • Mine fell out in handfuls. My mom and sister suffered the same. My moms didn't grow back. My sister took rogaine. My hair actually receded. It seems to be growing back so my fingers are crossed! I actually broke the vaccuum and clogged the shower one week.
  • Not quite an answer, but every time my hormones have changed drastically my hair either got thicker or thinner. When I started BC and when I stopped. And since being on the Clomid/Progesterone I've been losing it like crazy.

  • Ditto on strong nails during pregnacy.  My nails were always brittle, but these past few months I have been able to grow them.  A lot of the women I've talked to pretty much have told me they lost lots of hair after giving birth.
  • I haven't lost any extra hair.  I've always been a big shedder, though, ever since I was a kid.  I didn't notice any hair changes during pregnancy but I might have if my hair had been longer.  I did notice lots of skin changes, though.  My skin was awesome when I was pregnant!  It still looks pretty good.
  • Funny you ask this because I have been struggling with hair loss lately and it's doing a number on my self-esteem. While I was pg I noticed my hair thicker and fuller and it hardly fell out. Now it is falling out in droves! My hairline has receded significantly so I am gonna see my doc about what I can do to stop the loss and possibly reverse it.

My mom had really bad hair loss and thinning after she had me too, so I am not surprised. I don't mind the belly pooch, the stretch marks, or the messed up bf'ing boobs, but the hair loss is the one side effect of pregnancy that really gets me down. Sad

  • From all of the research I did - when you're pregnant, your body goes through the "fight or flight" and doesn't shed hair in the natural pattern that you normally shed.  So that's why hair is nice and thick during pregnancy.  After you have the baby, the body figures that you don't need the extra hair anymore and catches up with the natural cycle of hair shedding.  In order to catch up, it comes out in clumps for the first few months after delivery.

We had to call a plumber to unclog our drains, I shed so much!
