Romance isn't always flowers

I always have to remind myself that I don't live in a romantic comedy. My husband is not going to come home with flowers unless we move down the street from a flower shop (we used to, so I got them on occasion). Romance is knowing what your spouse likes and loves and acknowledging it.
Two days ago John and I are driving home from PA, it's a 90-120 minute commute so lots of time for talking. He asks me if I would like to invite my younger niece S skiing with us this winter. He said even if I can't ski he would take her down. I said "sure, but we have to think of something to do with H". He said I know I was thinking about a day in NYC.
He knows how much the girls mean to me and how much I enjoy spending time with them. So next time I'm upset with him, please remind me of this story.

  • aww that's sweet!  James isn't the flower-buying type either, he has on occassion but not often.  More often than not, he'll buy me a bag of the Andy Capp hot fries, those are my faves!

  • I know exactly what you mean.

There are some days where I secretly wish my husband was more romantic, like yesterday when all I wanted was an effing sonic diet coke but I wasnt around a sonic anywheres in sight, and D was passing right by one.. did he think, "hey, let me stop in and get my 8 month pregnant wife a diet coke bec it would be the sweet thing to do?" Nope. His thoughts were on getting home to me as soon as he could, so I guess that makes up for it. I also get his sweetness in more of a practical sense, like picking up the house when Im exhausted from time to time, or other nice things like that.

P.S. I have never gotten flowers from him, and it makes me a little sad, but I would never ever tell him this.

  • ...and now I want a DC from Sonic.

Ditto all of the above.  MH's awesome but in his own way.  Not in a romance novel sort of way.

That is the best kind of sweet!

MH likes to be romantic in practical ways too. He'll do some chores or get the baby fed and dressed and take her to school when I'm late. It's great. I should be more appreciative. But sometimes I wish he'd be romantic in a silly way like they do in country songs.

  • I just walked in from the gym and DH swept and mopped the kitchen floor!! now THAT is romantic!!! (he knows we are having some great company over tomorrow night so he decided to do it!)
  • That's awesome MT! Glad you have such a loving husband and those two nieces of yours that make you so happy.
