This post is for whining.

I have had a week full of minor irritations so I thought, hey why not vent on this rainy Wednesday.

This is what really grinds my gears today.

The people who used to own this house took a lot of shortcuts when they "updated" the house. I should have been prepared for a hassle when I started peeling the wallpaper because a previous task I thought would be noproblem was a pain in the but (seriously who puts carpet down with screws?!) but I thought hey it's wallpaper.  It's a pain to take off but at worst I will have to use a little spackle and maybe prime the walls.  WRONG!!

They put up the wallpaper to hide HOLES.  Not little nail holes but 4 or 5 toonie sized holes. In addition to these there are what used to be holes. They were filled with drywall compound but they didn't sand it at all.  Some of the plaster is on there so thick  I have had to actually scrape it down to be able to get it to where it can be sanded. They primed only half the wall so the paint under the wallpaper is peeling off with the paper.  I really get the impression that they hung the wallpaper after they started painting the rest of the kitchen because the wall looked like crap because they had no clue what they were doing when they replaced the drywall. So now I have a huge job to do just to be able to paint.  Dammit!

Re: This post is for whining.

  • That really sucks.  The previous owner of our house was a DYI disaster (who thought he knew what he was doing) so I can sympathize.

Are you going to have to cut a square out from around some of the holes and put a drywall patch in?

  • I don't think so,  I think I can fix them with tape and compound.  I am going to get a friend to look at it for me to tell me if I will have to patch.

  • If it's bad enough that you have to use tape, maybe drywall would be easier??  Just thinking that taping is usually the hard part, isn't it?

I'm impressed by your reno skills - and perserverance.  I probably would have got frustratred and made D do it :)

  • lol thanks.  I would never just leave it up to DH he is not at all handy.  I will get it prepped all by myself. DH will help me paint though.  I thought tiling the backsplash was going to be the most time consuming part.  I for sure thought I would have finished painting today.

DIY disaster... I love it. The previous tenant or our landlord are certainly this. I cannot believe the paint "job" in this house and the lack of upkeep. Instead of scrubbing out the water stains in the tub they painted over them. Yes, painted. Gah.

Are we married to the same guy?  My DH cannot do anything handy.  But it sounds like he tries at least.  Good luck on the renos.

  • gah... so stupid! I'd be peeved, too.

DH has sworn he will NEVER work with drywall, taping, mudding, sanding process again, after he did the basement ceiling.

You are a good handywoman, Sammy!
