Where to find red plumeria in Oahu

I hope you don't mind me asking. I am visiting beautiful Oahu this week. We are in Kapolei. I love it of course! I want to buy a blood red plumeria to take home and plant in my backyard. Does anyone know where I can find one to buy? I just need a small cutting (or four!). Thanks so much.

Re: Where to find red plumeria in Oahu

  • Check out this link.  I've never tried taking any type of plant material with me when I travel to the mainland, but keep in mind that you will need to report whatever you take back with you and it will need to be inspected by the US Department of Agriculture.
  • Yeah, definitely check with the US Dept of Agriculture's laws b/c I know you're not allowed to bring any pineapples back unless they're pre-approved and pre-packed for shipping back to the mainland, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're just as strict about plants. It may depend on where you live too, but I can't be sure. Esp with California, they're super strict with any kind of plants or fruits from any other state.

  • I've seen tons of cuttings ready to ship at Walmart...they even sell some at the airport.  I sent my grandma plumeria and some orchids.  They are also Ag approved already.

ditto.  I am not sure if I have seen red ones, but they definitely have pink, white, and yellow at all the normal touristy type stores.  They usually say pre-approved and I have never had a problem packing them home in my luggage.  My dad is pretty patient and good at gardening and has gotten them all to grow (inside) here in WA with only 1 dud out of about 4-6 in the past couple of years.

  • Thanks for the tips. Yes, I knew there were some already approved for air travel. I did see some at the airport and at Kmart also. I heard the best place is the swap meet at the stadium but we missed it. I found a nursery that will ship them back for me, so we will give that a shot. We sure had a great week there. What an amazing place!
