help, need advice-neck pains

hi ladies!

since you're all super smart and also so helpful i figured i'd ask you all. and hopefully there are some NPs or docs here :)

sooo... sunday night i thought i was coming down with a cold or something. went to bed early. come monday morning, my neck is stiff...it hurt to move. i got the hubby to massage it monday night. i thought maybe i slept funny.

now it's thursday and it still hurts. so i'm wondering, should i go see a doc? or do you think this is just something that will go away? does it last this long? could this be an indication of something more serious? and should i see a general doctor or just the chiropractor?

lemme see if i can describe the pain. so its mostly on the right side. my neck is stiff and the muscles at the back feel a little strained. when i try to tilt my head, i will get a slight strained pain (but not a crazy sharp pain).

maybe i'm just over reacting since i have nothing to do at work?

thank you! i'm gonna try if the pain will go away if i eat a oatmeal raisin cookie. haha

Re: help, need advice-neck pains

  • Did you strain it? Or are you working on the computer a lot, that can lead to increased tension.  I would see a doc, just to be sure it's not something major and if it's just a muscle strain, I'd be sure to use icy hot or tiger balm and stretch it.  A visit to the chiropractor and/or massage therapist might help too.  Good luck!

FWIW, I just had a flu shot yesterday on my right arm and last night my right side of my neck was sore and stiff.

  • I get that all the time since I sit behind a computer all day and then a nail technician by trade.  My Hubby usually has to dig in to the spot the hurts in order for it to loosen up.  He'll use his elbow....sounds like you need a good maseuse.  Try a hot compress, and move your head in a circular motion to loosen up those muscles.
  • also, do you sit at a computer all day?  if so, is the monitor in front of you or off to the side?  one of my friends developed a repetitive stress injury in college that way that lasted for over 5 years.  if not a computer, is there something else that you do a lot that might have cause an RSI?  hope you feel better soon!

I agree - you really need to be careful about how you sit at work and your posture when working...b/c over time these kinds of muscle pains can occur if you're sitting at an awkward angle and don't realize it.  I'd probably do compresses and ibuprofen for a few days and then if it doesn't seem better then I would see a doctor about it.

  • I just finally gave in and decided to see a chiropractor.  I always fought it because I've always heard, once you start, you can't stop.  Mainly because they want to see you alot and you want relief.  Well I gave in and couldn't be happier.  They will do some X-rays and then give you an adjustment.  I felt better the next day.  What he also recommended for me since I had some narly knots in my neck.....he wanted me to use one of those neck pillows.  Do you have one?  I have one and I've fought it because its hard to get used to, but if it will help, I'm down to trying it out.  If you don't have one of those, he suggested rolling up a towel and putting rubber bands on each end.  Does the same thing.  It allows your spine to get that curve while sleeping.  But I would definitely see a chiropractor.  I don't have the insurance for it but the adjustments cost me $35 each time I go in.  So ya, that won't be a common occurrence!  Hope you feel better.  I completely sympathize!

  • do you still have the other symtoms?  there are some strains of the flu that have included neck pain (and another common one that includes hip pain) I heard the health dept/clinic director at my work talking about them the other day.  So if you do have the other symptoms it might be worth going to the GP dr.

If not, it sounds like a strain and the PPs all gave great advice.

  • Thanks for all the tips. I think I got worried because the night before i started to feel the pain, i was feeling like i was getting a cold or something. And also because I have 3 day weekends now...i don't work as much at the computer (besides reading thenest posts :) ), so I thought it was weird that i'd get pain after the weekend. There were some headaches, pressure in the head and feeling tired and some pain throughout the week. It actually seems a little better today. I'll probably go to the doctor anyways just to be on the safe side.

    Thanks again!
