WWYD: Oct. 31st Dinner... UPDATE!

I'm debating what direction to take my menu for a dinner I'm hosting October 31st, Halloween night. We will have 3 couples (plus possibly a few more) attending, no children. As a guest, would you...

1) like to see a menu aligned with Halloween with scary, quirky, clever, foods that are meant shock you in light of Halloween?

2) like to see a menu aligned with autumn/fall with more elegant or sophisticated foods that highlight the season?

I know either way works. I'm also trying to find a way to combine the two directions where it can be Halloween without being so quirky and it can be seasonal foods without ignoring the fact it's halloween.

Any suggestions?

Update:

So I had lunch with my friend who will be coming to our Halloween party and asked her thoughts. She agreed with the nesties in that I should do a fun, halloween-esque menu since a fall/autumn menu can be done all the way through November. So quirky, scary halloween menu it is!

I'm drafting up my menu ideas and hopefully it goes well! Thanks again for your input ladies!

Re: WWYD: Oct. 31st Dinner... UPDATE!

  • Could you combine the 2?  Like the main being some sort of bone-in meat in a very red sauce, or a head on fish?  Or maybe go with the autumnal theme, #2, and then do a creepy dessert as a "surprise"?
  • I would do a menu aligned with autumnal or fall foods that are sophisticated or elegantly displayed for all of your courses except for dessert, then when everyone least expects it, have your ending (the dessert) be a scary or quirky Halloween recipe.   You could even change into a witch costume or something to present it!

Can't wait to read what your menu will be.  Your blog has become one of my favorites!  I gain 5 pounds just reading it!!

Oh...and my neighborhood is starting a cheese tasting party every month, thanks to inspiration from your Italian cheese party.  Can't wait to hear about your French cheese party later this month!

How funny that we gave the same response almost simultaneously.

  • My French cheese tasting is next week Wednesday - so stay tuned! Smile

LOL - I think the witch idea is hilarious... my friends would die laughing and wouldn't expect it at all. I actually dressed up as a witch one year when my friends came over and they freaked out when I answered the door.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the Autumn menu (it's just more my style, especially since we don't have kids) and I plan on making/packaging up some take home treats which I'll give them as they leave. Maybe that's where I'll give more of a Halloween flair without it distracting from an autumn menu.  I do like the dessert idea too... and/or maybe I'll make a cocktail or Halloween inspired punch!

Thanks ladies for your input and giving me more ideas/inspiration!

  • I've been looking for festive cocktails recently, and have come across a few that use black vodka.  Might be fun for a signiture martini for the evening as a nod to the day.  You could even go the extra step and serve them with a cube of dry ice.

  • I think 1 would be cute.  You can do 2 any time in Sep, Oct and Nov.  You can only do 1 the last week of Oct.

    I would agree with this.

    Very true...

My fall weekends are already booked up with events and this is the only weekend night I have to really treat my friends to a dinner, hence why I'm torn. I'm going to try to incorporate both autumn and Halloween-esque  dinner...

    Smile

  • It depends on the people coming to dinner. If  they don't celebrate or believe in Halloween, don't use the halloween option. I like the halloween option, but I LOVE halloween.

The second one is a good idea. Or you could mix the two.

  • Maybe a creepy appetizer.  I feel like there are so many directions you can take apps, that you can do good autumnal ingredients with a scary twist.  Like some sort of fingers or something.
  • Depending on how creative you are, I would take the "trick" idea and make foods that look like other foods. I have seen this done, but haven't tried it myself- so I can't rec anything in particular.
