Need decor suggestions

I'm not good at hanging/aranging things. I wanted to wait until we pain, but that may be a while. I don't know what to do with the mantle or what to put above it. Also we have a TON of space behind the couch that I am also clueless about. The stuff that I have up already I jus tthrew on nails that were already there to get it out of boxes. Help please!

Re: Need decor suggestions

  • I can't see the pics, but art is always good. My roommate and I went to Michael's, but Joanne, BBB, Ikea, all have similar sections (Target and Walmart too, but sometimes not as big) go and see if you see anything that goes with your colors and your taste and hang it up.

Or you can get some cool frames and put pics of the three of you arranged on the wall.

  • What about a really big clock over the mantle?  I've seen some oversized ones at Target.

I like the idea of a picture wall.  We have one upstairs in our hallway.  I've got some wallwords above the pictures.  Sorry the pic isn't great...it's hard to get one straight on.  I'm not an expert at hanging them "creatively"...I like them symmetrical.  At least it will give you an idea, though.

On our other "big" wall, I have our collection of crosses hanging up.  Again, nothing creative, just sort of nailed in where I can reach without killing myself on the stairs with the ladder (C is afraid of heights).   It wasn't something we meant to start...I liked the big one in the middle and it sort of exploded from there.  I've received them as gifts, find them when I'm out shopping (one is even a Christmas tree ornament), and we get 1 from each place we travel to.

If I think of anything else, I'll let ya know!  :-)

BTW - L is SO CUTE!!!  I just want to hug him!!

My sister has found some GREAT art at Ikea and the frames are nice and inexpensive!

  • Becki- your new house looks so spacious and open! L looks so happy! I am horrible at home decor, so I have no advice. I have a lot of bare walls because I can't decide how to decorate and I'm afraid whatever I do will look like crap.

Lori- I like those frames you have in the center...the triangle tops. Where'd you find those?

Those are my favorites too!  The triangle tops are actually the cords they each hang from.  I got them from Bed Bath and Beyond several years ago.

  • Haha, I knew those were cords, but I couldn't think of how else to describe them. Embarrassed
  • I LOVE mirrors. I love art too. And I have a HUGE photo wall.  Also, these things, http://www.officesupplieslane.com/mmm17202.html, our your friend! I wont use nails ever again! I would love to come help! I LOVE decorating!!!!
  • Becki-Love the new house. SO open.

That's a really hard space to decorate. My parents have vaulted ceilings and they did border print to break it up. Obviously border print is so 15 years ago, but maybe you could do something with the paint to break it up.

I like idea of a clock over the mantle. It definitely needs something centered over it. As for the wall behind the couch. I would do some kind of artwork. Like 3 larger pictures or something?

But it's hard for me to talk since I have bare walls too. :)

  • PS. L looks so stinkin cute!
  • I actually really want to get a giant clock - but I can't spend too much money right now. I saw this cool clock at Kohl's - It had the actual hands and then the rest was stick on so that it looked painted, if that makes sense. I love mirrors too and the idea of some art behind the couch. I need to take a trip to Ikea and Michaels.
  • Oh my favorite kind of post right now! Ok here's what I like, and I hope it gives you ideas.

First off, I am in love with these

    http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=30915449

But instead of putting them directly on the wall, we're going to put them on white press board and hang them.

On our mantel we have a mirror, and then some art that H got in jamaica and a picture his uncle drew for us as a wedding gift,a nd then some candle holders and a Buddha and some coral from our tank. If you aren't a fan of the mirror over the mantel, I say go for a big clock or maybe two floating shelves and do pictures on the shelves.

At Ikea, they have awesome fabric and fabric stretcher things that make your fabric into artwork you can hang. I'm thinking about doing something like that over our bed. I can't find the link but I saw them at the store and in the catalog. I'll keep looking

We have the photo/collage wall which I love and I got almost all our frames from Target on clearance. Walmart has some really nice inexpensive frames too, as does the Dollar Store. Then I get our photos from Shutterfly when they send me something for free pictures :)

I love love love your red brick fireplace. And you're spaciously high ceilings. Oh and L is so cute I want to kiss his cheeks. I think you should post more pictures :)

    I

I LOVE those stickers!!! Can I please copy you? Though I'm not sure if I would do those over our couch, or the bed. What is press board? I think they'd look nice on something but I don't know what that is. I also think I need to see a pic of your mantle :) I want to do a mirror over it maybe with sconces or lanterns on each side.

  • Press board is ridiculously cheap pressed recycled wood. It's like the cheapest stuff you can get. They have it at Home Depot and Lowes. It's so sooooooo cheap. On the back, D is going to drill out holes so they'll hang flat against the wall. When we get the decal/stickers I'll take a picture for you. Feel free to copy, I'm copying someone else's idea in a way.

Ok a picture of the matel is coming. Oh and there is an AWESOME mirror on clearance at Target for like $30, originally $60.

I got the wood candle holders and the candles from Ross and the metal candleholders and itty bitty Buddha are from Target.image

Wow! looks like a picture in a magazine!

  • We have really tall walls too. This is one of the things I bookmarked

I would look thru her whole blog though she has a ton of great cheap ideas.

    Those pics are gorgeous!

Sorry, I am of no help.  I have no clue what to put above our mantel either so  I'm kind of just checking out what others suggested here.
