s/o neck pains - pillows?

I saw the post below on neck pains. I get these off and on from my desk job too.

Has anyone here tried those curved foam pillows? Do you like them? Do they help? Any other suggestions?

Re: s/o neck pains - pillows?

  • do you mean for when you sleep?  I have tried the Temperpedic foam pillow they sell at Brookstone.  It has been really good for me, but it is like $100-150.

I think some people like those Asian round (cylindrical) pillows too that go right under the neck, you know the kind that feel like they have small beans or something in them.  I don't really have experience with those though.

good luck finding something that helps you!

  • yes. sleeping pillows. I have been eyeing some of theose s shaped tempurpedic ones for awhile now. Do they work? Are they comfortable to lay on?

  • I have a contoured tempurpedic pillow that I first got when I was having some neck pains... I do think that it helps...worth the money since it is your health that you are talking about (though I got mine cheap at a wholesale price through some of my parents' friends)

also good to look into getting an ergonomic chair and keyboard at work..and to make sure your computer monitor is in the right place... if anything is slightly off it can cause long term problems with your neck, back, or wrists.  sometimes you can convince your work to pay for these things if you explain that paying worker's comp for the pain problems is more expensive :P

  • I have a memory foam one that I paid much less for.  I brought it into my chiropractor to ask what he thought, he said it was great.  So thankfully I only spent like $40 or something like that.  It was awhile ago.  Bought it at like Bed Bath n Beyond, but I've seen them many places.

Here is what it looks like:

  • I have one just like adpilove, since I couldn't find the fancy tenpurpedic one, and was too lazy to order online.  I think it's been helping.
  • I toss & turn a lot at night so those types of pillows don't work for me.  And they are only good for side sleepers.  If you are a side sleeper and move around a lot at night like I do, you could look into a "regular" pillow for side sleepers (so it's more firm) that has a 1"-2" side gusset.  Those seem to work better for me.  Another pillow to look into if you're more of a back sleeper is a water pillow.  Unfortunately this one would be best filled by a professional (like a physical therapist or MD).  HTH!
  • Thanks everyone. I am going to send the $$ and give the temperpedic one a try. I sleep on my stomach with my head turned to the side which does not help. Hopefully this new pillow will re train me.
  • Just a heads up regarding sleeping on your stomach..........I, too, am a stomach sleeper and my chiropractor just this week told me it was the #1 most horrible thing we could do for our necks and backs.  So he has me working on this neck pillow.  Its taking some getting used to because its meant for a back sleeper or side sleeper, but I will tell you this, when I actually do fall asleep on my side, I DO NOT move all night long.  So its doing something right!

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to write. I've tried the special pillows before, but I'm too restless of a sleeper for them to be effective. I think the special pillows are really only useful if you sleep on your side and don't move much. I've found I have the best results with a regular medium firmness pillow (not too soft, but not the really firm one either).
