suggestions

Hi everyone!  For those with pets any suggestions on what to do to help keep the "dog" smell out of the house.  Since we have had all this rain, there are times where our house smells like dog and we can't seem to find anything to keep it out constantly.  little things like frebreeze helps for a short time.  We know we need our carpets cleaned, but any other good suggestions?  Thanks ladies!

Re: suggestions

  • our house is the same way!!! We haven't found a winner yet but the carpet powders really seam to help and i found an air freshner at Target that has been great! it doesn't last much longer then a month but when you walk in the house you can smell it.  i'm hoping for more reccomendations but that's where we're at with it
  • We always have a wallflower from B&BW in the wall in the main living area, and I febreeze the couches and carpets every day, which really helps. I also burn candles, and try to clean frequently. I get either the Febreeze for pet odor, or the Glade spray for pet odor. They both work great.

  • To the extent possible, drying your dog really thoroughly, especially paws, can help.

Also try sprinkling baking soda on your carpets, leaving it for 15-30 minutes, and then vacuuming it up (works for couches as well!). There's no way we're going to pay to have our apt carpets cleaned, and the owners aren't either, but this has kept us wet-dog-smell-free for over a year now :)

  • I'd try using vinegar instead of Febreeze.  Febreeze doesn't really deodorize as much as it masks odors.  Vinegar stinks, but it deodorizes, so once the vinegar smells goes away, the  wet dog smell should go too. As PPs suggested, baking soda on carpets and couches and burning candles work great too.
  • I say baking soda as well. Plus it's a lot better for your pets and all in the household to use than all the sprays and other carpet powders with chemicals. While they say they are safe for pets, they still have all that extra stuff in them you don't need and only cover the smell. Many have baking soda in them anyway.

Another thing that I've done for our couches and fabric furniture is running a dryer sheet over them. it helps with pet hair and really freshens the furniture up. I would often do that right before we were having guests after doing the whole baking soda and vacuuming. I still use candles, but having run the dryer sheet over the furniture helps when people sit on them since the candle smell isn't going to be on the fabric.

  • I vacuum alot...probably every other day in the first floor of our house and when we are home (I take them out when I leave the house) I use the Wallflowers.  I love them so I have 1 in each bathroom then I have one at our stairway and one near our kitchen/living/dining area.  For our furniture (even though Byron isn't allowed on it) we bought the Brilliant Citrus odor neutralizing spray from B&BW and it's safe for fabrics so I try to monthly use that plus I vacuum our furniture in the living room monthly including all cushions.

As for steam cleaning I got a SpotBot Pet to do small areas as they happen and I try to borrow my mom's large SteamVac every 3-6 months.  Our carpets are super light though so that's for a multitude of reasons.
