Can someone give me some advice regarding tankless hot water heaters? What are the benefits? What is a good brand? How much do they cost? Where is a good place to research them? Where do you buy them?
thanks!!
Re: Tankless water heaters
Here are all the threads on it.

We have one and love it. The benefits are the cost savings. with a regular water heater you are constantly heating the same tank of water which requires a lot of energy. With a tankless you have on demand hot water. It heats it as you need it. Plus it takes up no space at all (it mounts onto your wall). You can never run out of hot water either.
Our house came with ours so I dont know the exact costs but I think they are around $3000 to buy.
Benefits, like Jen said... Gas Cost (aka Environment) & Space. Although we just got our first gas bill with it for nearly the full month, and our gas usage didn't go down much. We also got a tankless because we needed a 'direct vent' system because our chimney that vented our old hot water tank was crumbling (the plan is to remove the chimney, otherwise could have repaired it instead). We could have got a high efficiency tank heater installed instead but opted for tankless. If you get an Eco-Energy audi you will qualify for $750 in rebates, and before Aug 31 there was an additional $300 from Enbridge. Although if this is for your new build I don't think it qualifies.
It was $3025 for the Navien CR-210 A. Good brands are Navien and Rinnai from what I have seen, but the Rinnai system has a special vent system that would not fit in our house because of the configuration of where our other vents and gas meter are. The Navien has a "condenser" that makes it 98% efficient. I didn't really find any good websites that compared brands. We bought ours from Active Temp Control - not sure if they are in Windsor but they are affiliated with Enbridge (Gas).
Since you are getting a new build, another benefit of tankless is instant hot water. If your builder builds in a circulate pipe (a feedback loop from all your sinks/showers/tubs), then the re-circulation pump inside the tankless water heater will keep the water in the pipe hot. You can program it so it only does that certain times of the day (ie. in the morning when you'r getting ready for work) so it does not waste energy running the pump if you don't need it. I would definitely recommend that for new build. It's nearly impossible to retrofit a house like that though.
Anyways our goal was to not notice the difference with it for usage, and we reached our goal... We are happy so far. (we've had it since Sept 1)
