Any of you moved away?

I moved away from Louisiana for college and I'm about to get married to someone from South Dakota.

Has anyone else married and moved away? Did you always want to go back?

Re: Any of you moved away?

  • Hey :) I actually grew up in IL, went to college in NC, and married my DH, who was from FL. We ended up getting married in and living in FL.

For me, I always would love to head back to IL. My parents and 2 brothers live there with their families. Sometimes it is really hard for me. I know I am starting a new family here, but I have always been close to my family, and being away from them is hard at times. We find ways - Skype, facebook, etc. But for me - I need that physical presence! I end up flying up there about 3 times a year...or as much as work and money will allow :).

If you have the ability (no work ties, etc), I would try to convince him that you would want to move back to Louisiana. I think I should have while I had the chance!(my DH said that if we didn't have jobs already, I could have asked him to move to IL) Now we are too settled to do that - so I am dealing with it :)

  • Trust me when I say I've asked him! He doesn't want to live in an area where our whole living could just wash away with the next hurricane. He didn't grow up with that as a norm, so I don't think I can subject him to that. It can get really mind-wrecking when a hurricane goes through, I assure you!

I can only visit twice a year, but I go for two weeks or so at a time. Unfortunately, my family isn't that technologically-savvy, so there is no Skype-ing and such--just phone calls.

I was hoping someone would tell me the call for home became less and less as they lived away. It kind of makes me sad that you're still just "dealing" with it (though I've been away from home for over 3 years now, and I'm getting better at being away too).

  • I was away from home for 8 year (4 for college, and 4 for work) and always wanted to mive back. The desire definitely dimished a bit, but it was always there. For me though, it was less about new orleans (although I LOVE the city) and more about the fact that I wanted to be around my family and raise kids around my family.
