Pity party for one :(

I am so bummed out.  A manuscript that I have been working on, well for about three years (considering it was a shoot off of my dissertation) was rejected from a journal last night.  They had reviewed it once and gave feedback for a resubmission (which is usually a positive sign).  I'm just totally lost right now because I don't know whats next for me.  So much work and time and it is seemingly lost.  Since I'm not full-time anywhere conducting research is nearly impossible.  UGH...I know you guys don't have a magic solution, I'm just upset and confused and am really concerned about my career and where to go next.  I just needed an outlet I guess.

OK, and just so you know I feel like a tool complaining abut this after that super sad situation on the Bump boards.  I read that last night and it did put things in perspective, I do have a lot to be thankful for.

  • Oh, Desiree, I'm so sorry. I've had this happen once before with a manuscript and it's the most disheartening thing. Especially after a resubmission. It'd almost be better to get the flat-out rejection first. But keep your chin up. All is definitely not lost. Just re-submit to another journal and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I had to re-submit to 3 different journals for my Masters thesis, but it finally got accepted. It just takes time sometimes. Hugs to you.

  • Did they give you any reasons for rejecting it? Could it be revised and submitted anywhere else? (Sorry I play with buttons all day so I have no idea how this works.)

  • You are right Victoria, all is not lost.  I'm trying to keep this mindset.  I'm just thinking about what I typically research, and I may want to change this.  ahh - I don't know

I can submit it somewhere else, but we just can't figure out where.  The issue is that it is a theoretical paper, there is no data.  It is a massive hulk of a manuscript, about 100 pages.  The journal that was reviewing it is the main journal that reports new theories, and there are just not very many of these (and no other top-tier ones).  We have detailed reviews from the reviewers - which I spent last night reading.  Most of them had positive things to say in addition to the negative.  We just need to figure out the next step.

  • ?That can be very disheartening (I have had many a story rejected by magazines). But don't let it stop you! Take their edit advice and resubmit!

And remember, Colonel Sanders was rejected 1000 times!! (KFC had $520 million in revenue last year).?

  • Given that I don't know your topic, have looked into submitting to international journals?  They are usually ranked lower here in the U.S. and therefore easier to get into for people like you and me, but a lot of them carry a good deal of weight in their countries of origin.  I know my advisor has some working relationships with journals in England and gets invited (on fully paid-for trips) to do talks in London all the time.  Doesn't sound like such a bad way to spend one's time.
