  We used Empire Today for handscraped hardwoods in the common areas of our rental house.  They did a good job, but we later found the same materials at their distributor and paid a contractor to install them in the bedrooms.  We could have literally saved thousands of dollars had we gone that route the first time.  The retail stores are generally going to cost more, you might check into surplus floors and warehouses to see if you can purchase materials and they generally always have a list of independent contractors you can hire.

  We bought our flooring from Lumber Liquidators in Plano. We got a really good deal on it. We had someone else put it in, that I can't recommend though. At the places we looked it was cheaper to buy the flooring ourseleves and have an independent person put it in. I'm not sure what kind of flooring you are looking at but ours is hardwood.
