IMO A Nestie's guide to The State Fair of Texas

Go early.  We arrived at around 10ish and it was cooler, no traffic, and no stress.

Parking-$10.00  We took 30 and followed the signs to the Superpages center and parked in there.  Which was perfect because we went in that gate, there was the Pepcid AC booth that was giving free samples.  They also had free photos printing with four poses.  LOVED IT!  DH and I have a free souvenir.

Food-We love the foot long corn dogs.  They have the perfect amount of dog and batter.  11 tickets each  We prefer it over Fletchers.

The Gordita DH had was delicious.  It was located  by the Cotton Bowl entrance.  They were very generous with the toppings and that chicken...woo.  Devine.  10 Tickets

Fried okra...not so much.  Very greasy.  They also sold fried bologna...looked interesting.

Fried bacon is so not all that.  Way too salty.

Nachos...taste like Nachos.  Nothing special.

Pickles...shop around.  Last year I found a place that sold them fresh.  Everyone I saw this year came from a jar.  One thing I saw interesting were pickle pops...frozen pickle juice.  Fun.  3-5 tickets.

Drinks -Between the two auto shows, there is a stand that sells the best homemade lemonade ever!  It is next to a place that sells waffles and fried chicken.  :)  Seriously, they give you a slice of orange and lemon and ohhh the sweetest taste of heaven you ever did drink.

The Taffy place has the most delicious Sweet Tea ever!  It was only 4 tickets too!   Very cheap.

By the auto shows, you can get some homeade root beer.  I like.  5 tickets for a small.  Not too shabby.

Sweets- LOOOOVE the cotton candy...duh.

Funnel cake is awesome!

I wasn't a fan of the fried Snickers.  Lots of hype and it ain't all that.

I was going to try the Fried butter, but that line was ridiculous!  Maybe next time.

The bathrooms in the Women's museum is my personal favorite.

I'm a teacher so my tickets were free, but you can save 1.50 if you buy them at Krogers.  Normally 15 a pop.

This is just my review.  What are your opinons?  I am going back and want to know what other people like...

Re: IMO A Nestie's guide to The State Fair of Texas

  • Oooh! Thanks for posting this!!  DH and I are going to go in a few weeks with some friends to celebrate my birthday.  I am going to remember this when deciding what to eat!!  I don't think I can do the fried butter though...

AND I will go to Kroger to get my tickets! Thanks for the heads up!!  Smile

  • Again, SOOO jealous and sad I can't go this year. They just don't have the TX state fair, or fair food, here in Japan. Sucks. I miss Texas Sweet Tea and texmex food something fierce!! Don't get me wrong, Japan is awesome an amazing, and you guys should all come visit, but I miss greasy, fried, state fair food and sweet tea!!!!
  • we went last night and had a blast! We enjoyed our  chicken fried bacon and really liked the fried butter. We did the garlic flavor and thought it tasted like buttery garlic bread. The breading was light and fluffy... almost like a doughnut hole in shape and texture. Definitely not as scary as it sounded when they announced it would be at the fair.

We also had corn dogs and lemonade. We love the petting zoo and the car show - those are things we hit up every year!

  • How do teachers get free tickets? Do I just show my ID?

  • I went yesterday. I'm reminded, again, that I'm really not a fair person. We went only because my theater tickets got us in free and my mom was visited from out of town.

Everything was clean, it was not crowded, and there was lots of security

I just don't think there is that much to do... the exhibit halls are full of a bunch of 'as seen on TV' crap. We did sit for a food demo from the executive chef from Mortons, which included samples and coupons, and that was the highlight. Auto show was fine, though I could see it all at my local dealer. Nothing impressive. I really enjoyed the women's museum but didn't get to see all the exhibits. It's off the beaten path and practially empty. I'm going to return when it's not the fair and spend some time there.

We didn't try much food. Most of it honestly grosses me out. I will say I didn't think it was that expensive for fair food and I'm pretty cheap.

Tip: The Schepps booth inside the food court has bottled water for 3 tickets ($1.50). all other booths were 6-8 coupons.

We didn't park there, had someone drop us off that lives nearby, and it was really easy to get in and out.

I went around 3pm, there were no lines to get in or anything. Stayed until 630 (show was at 7pm). 3.5 hours was plenty for me to last another 10 years =)

On another note - Mary Poppins was flippin' fantastic and a must see.
