Y'all probably think all I ever think about is health insurance (I feel like I ask questions about it a lot!).
Anyway, we have Blue Cross Blue Shield for our health insurance. DH called the other day to find out about adding the baby to the insurance and also to tell them we wanted to add maternity coverage (you might remember we don't have maternity coverage for this pregnancy, but we wanted to make sure we have it for the future). They told him that BCBS in Texas doesn't offer any form of maternity coverage!
Now I want to switch health insurance companies because I think that's crazy and I really don't want to pay out of pocket for all of my subsequent pregnancies. So, I was wondering if those of you that have health insurance with maternity coverage could tell me which provider you have? Also, if you don't have a problem with it, telling me how much you pay? If you don't want to tell me how much you pay, that's fine, just let me know the provider.
Thanks!
Re: What Health Insurance do you have?
We have individually purchased insurance through Assurant. They do have a maternity benefit, but it's not real great however they & Golden Rule (United HealthCare's individual provider) were the only two we could find who offer any maternity and Assurant's is better than Golden Rule.
We pay right under $300 per month for T, me, and maternity coverage. The maternity benefit has a $5k deductible, but once that is reached they cover 100%.
Some girls on The Bump were saying they have BCBS and they have maternity coverage, but I haven't found out anything else about how they got the insurance (individual or company) or when they got it. I'm not sure what you do, so I don't know if it will make a difference but, I talked to my mom today who is a teacher and has her coverage through the school/state and they use BCBS and they do NOT get maternity coverage (she asked a lady at her school who just had a baby and one who is pregnant also).
techdg, I'd be interested to learn more whenever you have a chance because I am SO terribly confused about all of this.
What?! I work for a school and I have the TRS BCBS and I have maternity coverage....something isn't right...I have TRS ActiveCare 2. My deductibles are pretty high, but I have coverage for the OBGYN visits and whatnot. I'm going to look over my information books from TRS ActiveCare tomorrow when I'm at school.
I got this cleared up through people on The Bump. They DO NOT have any sort of maternity coverage for individual plans. You have to be through a company plan to get maternity coverage through them. I don't know why they people at my mom's school said they couldn't get maternity coverage on their teacher plans through BCBS - that may just be some kind of mistake through them.
I pretty much found out we are out of luck for getting much in the way of maternity coverage on an individual plan. It really sucks that we don't have insurance through DH's firm!
I called my mom again and she just explained it to me wrong yesterday. The teachers DO have maternity coverage, but they don't get any maternity leave.
Sorry for the confusion!
