I totally took a sick day today because I didn't feel like going to Chicago this week. Which got me thinking that I more often take sick days when I don't feel like going to work rather than when I'm actually sick...when do you use your sick days?

We dont actually get sick days... we just get 24 days of paid time off per year, they can be vacation, sick days, holidays, etc. It sucks in a way because I have to use a PTO day for Christmas but its also nice to not have to worry about multiple pots of days.
That being said, no one actually pays attention to how many days I use either. So I really dont even keep track of it. So long as I dont take off more than 2 full weeks per year, no one really pays attention to the individual days. With the wedding this year, I think I'll end up using about 30 days.

I also don't get "sick" days. I have paid time off which is sick time or vacation time. I get 27 days per year plus an additional 9 holidays (8 holidays + 1 floating holiday).
Since I work from home, I almost always work when I'm sick unless I'm in really bad shape because I like to keep my paid time off for vacation.
I have to disagree with you here. Not that I take sick days willy-nilly--I still have about 10 sick days banked--but I think mental health is just as important as physical health. I know that if I'm feeling pretty tired or just mentally "not there", like I am today, I'd be totally unproductive at work. And like other ppl, I usually go to work sick anyway, so I think it balances itself out.
When I had a desk job, I probably used them more frequently for family health days (like, taking a sick day after my brother was in the hospital/when my mom was really sick) or for mental health days (like when one of my best friends moved away and I was up until 2:00 a.m. crying).
Now that I'm teaching, I don't take a sick day unless I'm so sick I can't physically go to school. And even then sometimes I'll try to muster the strength to at least sit there and watch them do group work.
That's bc I am a terrible, shittttty person. I like to take advantage of my employers whenever I can. In all honesty, I work literally about 70 hours a week. Sundays are my only day off, and I've been doing this for about 3 years. If I want to take a sick day off once or twice a quarter I am going to do it. I literally never, ever get sick enough to stay home from work so I'd be damned if I was going to 'give back' my 6 sick days a year to my employer.
A few days a year for mental health is fairly normal but when it starts adding up to multiple weeks a year it's probably a sign you need a new job IMHO. I have a coworker who calls in 30+ days a year because she is "sick". If you don't show up more than 10% of the time, it is hard to imagine that you are happy in your job or that you can handle the job. Said co-worker has more or less been demoted because of her lack of attendance. For her to call in only 6 days a year would be an improvement.
I don't call in sick because I am hardly ever sick and as I mentioned before, it would screw me over more than anything else. To be honest, I'm kind of jealous of those who can take mental health days without all of the reprecussions.
Lucky, what do you do that someone can take 30 sick days a year? That's just insane. I've never worked somewhere where someone wouldnt get fired for taking over 10 or so (unless they were on their death bed)
Like I said, I work pretty much 70 hour a week, and a day here and there doesn't matter all that much. When I say here or there I mean 1 or 2 a quarter. I just have to work harder the following day to make up for the stuff I missed. I work in finance so there are days that are dead, and there are days that I have so much work I don't know what to do.
Who knew this thread would get so heated?
FYI...I've actually been working pretty hard on a project that apparently I can't leave for a day. I've gotten more phone calls/emails at home than I ever get at work, and I actually had to go to the office over lunch to fax something to the Chicago office. Ugh.
I have 21 days of PTO and get 8 holidays. If I don't use them by the end of the year, they're gone. So, I use all of them.
I used to have 2 weeks vacation, 5 sick days, and 2 personal days that were gone at the end of the year. Why wouldn't I use all of them? It'd be stupid not to.
I work in apparel design and development. She was demoted to box opener because she takes off so much time and since it's a large corporation, HR won't let them do anything about it. They finally caught on that she was faking and made her use PTO. We don't have a set number of sick days and it doesn't count against your PTO but it does require management approval. I'm particularly grumpy about it this week because she called in yesterday and today so I got stuck doing her job for 2 days while my work gets pushed back. It sucks because if she is gone the boxes still have to be opened and someone fills in but if I'm gone the vendors just wait a day for responses to their questions.
I get 15 sick days, 3 personal days, and about 12.5 paid weeks off a year.
That being said, last year I was a first year teacher and I was CONSTANTLY sick. I was out a week before Christmas, and a week after New Years. I used all of my sick days for being sick, with the exception of maybe one or two mental health days.
This year I will most likely use less sick time because I want to save it up for when I pop out a mini-cdob. That, and I can't afford to miss work - I am literally swamped all day.

During my customer service and food service jobs in college, I called in maybe 5 times in 5 years because when I would call in, it would totally screw over people that I mostly liked.
Now that I have a real job and get PTO, I see nothing wrong with calling in randomly. I haven't yet, but I wouldn't feel bad in my situation because it really doesn't matter since my work doesn't effect anyone else's.
My your superstitious findings, I should be coming down with the swine flu sometime this year.
Daisy, you have to look at the side that a lot of companies have PTO, which doesn't differentiate sick time from vacation time. My last job I could use my days however I saw fit. It didn't matter if I was on my death bed sick, or sipping pina coladas on a remote island somewhere.
I also work in a restaurant (job#2). I've worked in the same restaurant for 3 years and have never called in sick. In my office job my work is my responsibility. If I don't do it, it comes down on me. No one else is responsible for my stuff. If I take a day off, its my problem. I am not dragging anyone else into my work to pick up the slack. If that was the case, I would probably think differently about calling in sick.
