what is better than a wedding registry?
a baby registry! We are going to visit the ILs this weekend and b/c it's our only trip back before the baby is born my SILs are throwing me a shower and I may have just peeked at the registry...
For our wedding we were really blessed/spoiled with great gifts, but in reality we didn't really NEED that stuff (I mean we had functioned just fine w/out it all on a daily basis). It makes life more fun, and it's great to have beautiful new stuff. But... a baby registry is so much better because it's stuff we don't have and will be using on a daily basis (I hope anyways) and all the stuff is just so fun and cute.
Re: what is better than a wedding registry?
oh that is interesting. I love learning new things. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure baby registries are pretty new? At least for my family.
I honestly thought a baby registry wasn't something I was going to do so I made a small wishlist of the bigger items we wanted and I had researched and gave it to my mom/grandma. My family doesn't do before the birth showers so I didn't think it was necessary and when my mom and I went to do it it felt odd. But now that I completed it and see that people are buying stuff - which will be a huge help - I'm really excited.
I know they were using them in CA before I moved (so 2001-2002?) but really that's still relatively new.
Baby showers here seem to be a bit lower key anyway - you'd put clothes, books and toys on a registry (or list), but never furniture, strollers, etc.
yeah, I guess that is why it felt odd to me - because what you explain is like all the baby showers I have been to (only family ones). Maybe with a swing or something bigger from the grandma or something. But I think my family is pretty old fashioned and I think that is how they use to be.
I was amazed at my SILs shower, there were a ton of guests, it was at the country club, and many guests did "go in on one big gift" (like the places say, but I had never really seen in real life). They said this shower they are throwing for me is just going to be a small little one but from what I have heard I can tell it's way more elaborate than my bridal shower here. Hmmm, regional/family differences I guess.
I think this is what it must come down to - in my family (and it seems to be true for all the showers I've attended in Australia, too), you just give the little things - diapers, clothes, etc.
I've never seen furniture given, except by the mother of the pregnant woman (not even from grandparents or siblings). I was amazed when I started reading the baby boards on the Bump and women were getting strollers and cribs and stuff - I didn't realize that happened in some families/areas!
I agree! I loved researching everything and putting it on our baby registry
And getting the stuff was so fun, baby gifts are WAY more fun than wedding gifts.
We only had one registry on Babies R Us but we bought all the "big" stuff ourselves...mostly because I was particular and the crib, stroller, etc stuff that I wanted wasn't carried at BRU.
We're right around the corner from Sean Patrick's 1st birthday and he's got a wish list on Amazon.com. It's just easier to refer people there that ask what he needs/wants
I wish every kid had a wish list somewhere, baby gifts aren't as difficult as birthday gifts but once they start getting older, I'm never sure what the kids are into so a list from the parents is really nice. The Amazon one is great because you can add stuff from any website.
Ah, here it is...I wasn't imagining things. Linky-Loo below...

Interesting! Now I have to decide for sure if I'll have a baby shower lol. Frankly, the "oh sh!t we're having two kids $$$$$$$" side of me wants to, but sadly, I only have like 3 female friends here that I'd invite to a shower (I'm a loser I know). We've thought about doing some kind of relaxed co-ed BBQ...dunno if a registry would be appropriate for that?
Lucky, lucky! We've registered with Amazon.com, but since I am not having a shower (all of my friends and family who would attend or throw me one live in CA and I am in OK) I wonder if anything will be purchased off it other than by us or my mom! The ladies at work may throw me one, but I am worried since those showers usually involve a diaper lotto (or whatever it's called) and we're not even using sposies. I have told a few ladies in the office I am CDing, so hopefully they'll spread the word on that one. Even so, I expect that if they do throw me a shower the gifts will be small toys, keepsakes and clothing. So the big stuff? I am trying to find used on Craigslist and at consignment sales.

Well I hope you register so we gals in cyberspace can throw you a "virtual shower." For reals!

Our family always gives "big ticket items" for shower gifts...I gave a FP swing to my BFF at her shower. My other friend we did a high chair. Maybe that's just us? Typically the grandparents buy the crib, dresser/changing table for the first baby in the family...but since the economy has tanked, my parents aren't really in a position to do that (even though my siblings all got the royal treatment when their first babies were born...5-10 years ago). Oh well, we're making due with a second-hand Arm's Reach Co-sleeper and a repurposed IKEA shelf with a contoured changing pad on top and baskets to store clothing below....

They do and it's awesome! Universal Registry button rules! I've added things from Cottonbabies.com, Etsy, Gymboree, Target, etc.
I mainly keep the registry updated for myself...so I can remember where I saw whatever it is that I want to get for the baby. If someone else decides to make a purchase of it, yay, but I am not expecting that will happen.

I did one on amazon too, but like you it was mostly just to get myself organized b/c I didn't really think anyone would order stuff off from it. Also I added a few things BRU didn't have (highchair, certain color of co-sleeper, ergo) so my MIL could look them up online because she really wanted to offer lots of advice and kept wondering why I wasn't registered for a pack and play.
It's a good idea to keep a baby/child wish list going - I will have to remember that, especially with out of town relatives.
Awwww...you're too sweet!
