Food suggestions please!

I'm having my family over this weekend for a birthday celebration, and can't decide (well, really have no idea) what to serve.

The old stand by of hot dogs and hamburgers with sides is a real possibility at this point.

Any suggestions on things to serve as appetizers and main course? It's a noon time thing, and we can grill or use the oven. Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: Food suggestions please!

  • What about a soup or chili?  Serve it with a salad.  Make some kind of hot dip and serve with french bread.  I might make this one for the lake this weekend. http://goodiesbykate.blogspot.com/2009/09/super-bowl-snack-thrown-down-week-2.html

You could also do italian sausage, peppers and onions.

Since it is at noon you could also do brunch.  Frittata, fresh fruit, bagels, patato casserole, etc.

  • You could do a pasta bar and offer 3 different types of pasta and 3 different types of sauces (marinara, alfredo, pesto). Side salad.

  • Last time I had family over I made kabobs. They are a little time consuming to put together but it's really easy once that's done. I do mine with all chicken together on separate skewers and all veggies together and all pineapple on some. I don't like to mix them because they have different cooking times...it seems to work out better when they are separated. THen everyone can just take a kabob of each type of food!

THe marinade I use is simple, one part vegetable oil, one part honey and one part soy sauce. I also add in a little chopped garlic. Separate chicken into one large ziploc and veggies (I use peppers, mushrooms, red onion, zucchini) into another bag and marinate overnight. I don't usually marinate the pineapple, I just brush on the marinade while it's grilling and it picks it up just fine. *not sure if you can find fresh pineapple this time of year but whenever i make this the pineapple goes super fast- so buy extra!!
