Any golfers or wives of golfers?
Our anniversary is coming up and I'd like to get DH a new set of clubs. He is currently using FIL's old set, which isn't working out well since FIL is about 5'-10" and DH is 6'-4". To watch the poor man golf is very comical. haha What brands of clubs do you recommend? Did you stick to the usual Dicks, Golf Galaxy or are there better places around town or online to get clubs. I'm not looking to get top of the line, name brand clubs. Something affordable would do the trick.
TIA!

Re: Any golfers or wives of golfers?
We don't buy a full set of clubs for DH all at once because they are so expensive. He will get a new set of irons one year and the next year get a new putter, then a new bag, etc.
He likes Taylormade and I've only used Taylormade, Callaway and Nike so I don't really know much about other brands. I would stick with ***'s. They have a great selection and the people know what they are talking about. You can find printable coupons online for Dicks. DH never goes to Golf Galaxy, I think it is too expensive.
We've never ordered online, but DH's friend uses kensdiscountgolf, which I think is a store on Ebay.
Good Luck!
DH and I are both golfers and I just went through this with my husband. He wanted new clubs for his 30th birthday but custom fit golf clubs are very expensive. (A total custom fit new set can be $1000).
If you're going to do this I would definitely start at Golf Galaxy they REALLY know there stuff (and really your DH should be there because they'll take a look at his height, swing, price point, etc. and find things that really work for him.) At ***'s there's no guarantee that the associate who helps you will be as knowledgable.
Both places sell golf clubs in two ways. One is to get a "full box set." Which includes a bag, the woods, irons, putter etc. (Basically everything you need in one box.) These tend to be cheaper - somewhere around $150-$300 for everything. But the quality isn't as good and I'm pretty sure you can't get them fitted or different lengths - which might not be good for someone that tall.
The other way you buy golf clubs is piece by piece and it can get VERY expensive. Typically you buy a set of all the irons - which can range from $300 - $800. (Crazy.)
Then you have to buy a putter ($100) and the woods - DH just spent $300 on a driver and a 3-wood. (Our compromize instead of buying him a whole new set.)
So I think the real question is what kind of a golfer is your DH? I mean - does he play a lot? Is he any good? Would he know the difference between clubs that are custom fit to him vs generally the right size? Would he know the difference between a really high end set and a kind of "starter" set out of the box? I think that will sway your decision.
One final thought is that my DH looked at places like Play it Again Sports and they had really nice full sets that were practically brand new. I think he said somewhere in the range of $200. And they were high quality brands that you might be able to take to Golf Galaxy to have them fit. So that might be another options.
Either way - I think you'll win the coolest wife of the year award.
HTH!
Our ***'s has knowledgeable associates so I like going there.
Just a warning about Play it Again Sports; make sure you compare prices with other stores because they aren't always the cheapest. We've never looked at golf stuff, but their fitness equipment is actually more expensive than some other stores. Their weights were more/lb. than Dicks or Sears.
Golf can be a very expensive sport. We test drive clubs out at the local stores and then find deals on them online. We like using The Golf Warehouse. They always have clearance items and sale items.
I wouldn't have this gift be a secret. Let him know what you are doing. He needs to "test drive" the clubs. Take him out and let him play around with them.
I bought DH a new set of irons for Christmas and for about 2 months prior, he played around until he found a set he liked. The grips, shafts, make of the clubs vary so much.
We also do the piece by piece route. I only use about 8 clubs in my bag. It was a waste to pay for a whole set if certain clubs just sat there collecting dust.
Katie: 1/16/08 2lbs. 15oz.
Abby & Emily: 12/31/10 6lbs. 2oz. & 5lbs. 7oz.
Thanks Ladies! DH isn't too much of a golfer. He likes to golf, but doesn't really get the chance to go out that often and he dispises his current clubs. I'm kind of torn now between going peice by peice and just getting him a box set. He pretty much needs every club so I'm leaning towards the set, plus I don't want to spend tons of money on clubs that he may or may not really use that often.
Maybe I'll talk to him about it tonight at dinner and see what he thinks. He's already hinted that he'd like to have Jeep parts for our anniversary (so romantic- I know) so maybe I'll save the clubs for his birthday or Christmas so he's got more time to look around and find what he really wants.
