Mold ?

Hi ladies, I don't normally come around here but I'm thinking you are the best ppl to ask this.  My dh and I live in Slidell and are buying a new home.  The neighborhood is all new construction since 2005.  You guessed it Katrina did a # on our future place considering that the swamp/wetlands is literally in the back yard.  We were under the impression that only the slab was there at the time but apparently some of the framing as well.  I think the house got finished sometime early 2007 and has been on the market waiting.  Okay so the inspection today found mold and my ? is , is there any way to treat/clean it up w/o pulling out the sheet rock?  I was told by a co-worker that they can treat it through air ducts...yeah I don't know.  Any idea how long this would take to clean up?

Re: Mold ?

  • Hi -

I live in Slidell too. I am not sure exactly what to tell you about the mold or how to clean it without pulling out sheetrock, but i work for an A/C & Heating Company and what i can tell you that you will not be able to treat that mold from your Air Ducts.  Our company does not do air duct cleanings because my boss (my step-dad) says that it can get really expensive and doesn't really work as well as people think.  We sell UV lights to our many of our customers (not really as expensive as it may sound) to help kill the mold.  It kills any mold that passes in the air. However, there is nothing you can do with the air ducts to kill the mold in your walls.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that. I hope everything gets resolved for you as quickly as possible. - Stacy

  • I think the key would be where they found the mold. If it is in the airducts then that's on issue, but if its in or on the walls, or behind the walls the sheet rock will definitely have to come out. If you all absolutely love the house, i would suggest getting a mold specialist. You house inspector should be able to recommend a credible one. But in my opinion its probably not work all the headache unless the owners are going to give you a big consession.
