chemical hair straightening ?
Ok so I got past my fear last week and got my hair permanently straightened (or so I thought it would be) The salon used the Matrix opti-smooth formula for highlighted hair. It looked great for 2 days, until I washed it- then all my waves came back!! Ughh I was so upset, after doing months of research on the procedure, and not to mention it took a total of 5 hours at the salon and $250! So, now I am using reconditioning treatments to strengthen my hair to hopefully have it done again in 4 weeks... but I am not sure if I should go with the same brand or try a different one, they think because they had to use the highlighted formula that it didn't take all my wave out because it is not as strong as the reg. formula.... any advice from hair stylist or anyone else? TIA!!
Re: chemical hair straightening ?
I'm not a hair stylist and I have no advice, but may I ask...why would you want to get rid of your waves? I bet that your natural waves are probably really pretty. I too have wavy/curly hair and yes, sometimes I do wish it were super straight, but I can still work with it. I actually think that when I straighten my hair too much that I take all of the body out of it and it just looks like straw on my head (this is just me, of course!).
Anyway, I was just wondering b/c people would kill to have naturally wavy hair and I'm sure it's very pretty just the way it is!
Wow! I'd be upset, too, after spending all that money. With the formula they used on you, how long did they say it would last? I would think that it should have lasted longer than it did. How is that any different than using a flat iron, then washing your hair and your waves obviously all come back? Can you call the salon and speak to someone about your dissatisfaction?
My cousin is a hairstylist and I was actually talking to her about chemical hair straightening the other night. She said her salon (in MD where she works) uses a new product that doesn't contain all the harsh chemical like conventional straighteners but contains keratin. Keratin is a protein naturally found in hair, skin, nails, etc. She said it is supposed to last anywhere from 3-6 months and is safer on your hair. I went on her salon's website and the name of the treatment is: "Keratin Complex Hair Therapy by Coppola." Not sure if it's ok for highlighted hair but I would think so.
GL to you!
haha I know... my mom tells me the same thing, she used to get perms and all to have the curl and all that I have, after seeing my hair straight like that I love it! And I could always curl it if I want to, I just wouldn't have the frizzy curls like I had before, so I can see where some people say why do you want to get rid of your curls- but for me its just time for a new style!
The process I had done is supposed to last until your hair grows out again, so anywhere from 10 months to a year, depending on how fast your hair grows. I did go into the salon, however the owner is on vacation until next week so I have to talk with her about what they can do.

lookI can definitely understand needing a hair change. I got from wanting long curly hair to long straight hair, to shoulder length to a pixie cut, etc.
I also like dying my hair with the seasons whether it be brown, blonde or red. I think it's a girl thing. My DH hasn't changed his hairstyle in 15 years, HAHAHAHA!
I'm sorry it didn't work for you and I wish I could help. I actually used a reverse perm (solution, but no rollers)years ago (two 19 yr olds fooling around at home)and have had rather straight hair ever since(though I still use a straightner for perfection). It had a weird lightening affect on my hair which made me want to be blonde. I'm not suggesting this-just giving my experience.
