OHIP question

DH just told me that there is a 3 month waiting period for OHIP. WTH? This freaks me out. What am I going to do about DS? He's 3 months on Saturday and he'll be due for a well baby appointment in a month. How can I do that if he is on a waiting list?

And what happens if either of us get sick. Are we shitoutofluck?

Re: OHIP question

  • I got travel insurance (vistor's to Canada)  through here:

    http://www.travelinsurance.ca/plans/visitorsGeneral.php

It only covers emergencies though.  But better than nothing=)

This is from the OHIP site:

    http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/ohip/wait.html

"How can I get coverage during the waiting period?

During the waiting period, you may be able to purchase private health insurance through a private insurance company if you meet the company's eligibility requirements.

Contact a private insurance company or call the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. at 1 800 268-8099. In Toronto, call (416) 777-2344.

The above is only a summary of the OHIP eligibility provisions of Regulation 552 for your reference.  You should consult the actual regulation for the specific requirements applicable to you.  The provisions in Regulation 552 prevail over this summary.

  • Yes, I believe there is a three month waiting period. However, you will still be able to see a doctor during that time- they will just charge you what they would have charged the government. And don't worry, health care costs in Canada are dramatically less than the US- I used to work at OPTions for Sexual Health BC (formerly Planned Parenthood, which bills the government for the full cost of all services and not the patient) and we had American clients who came in who didn't have Canadian health care. We billed them for the full cost, the same as what we would have charged the government- which was $27.90 for a full pelvic exam. I can't imagine a well-baby check up would be more than that, so don't stress about it too much. Same with if you get sick, although hospital visits would be a lot more (I think our local hospital bills $750 to out-of-country patients for an ER visit).

  • Heck, even $750 sounds cheap for an ER visit, Thanks ladies, I'll try not to stress.
