A Pennsylvania girl that needs your help!
Hi, ladies! I have lived in PA my entire life and my DH and I just found out that within the next year we will be moving to Louisiana. There's a small problem: we know NOTHING about Louisiana! His job will be in New Orleans. Would anyone be able to recommend some nice areas where we can start looking for a house???? TIA!
Re: A Pennsylvania girl that needs your help!
#1- EXACTLY where is his job going to be? (this is important because people will say New Orleans because it is the closest big town when it is actually in Kenner or LaPlace.
#2- what type of lifestyle are you looking for? family based suburb, new construction, bohemian semi-urban, gritty urban, urban chic, Artsy..
#3-- Children? schools are the driving force of why many many people live where they do here in the city.
#3-- is DH willing to commute?
#4-- are you going to work if so what/where?
I know that sounds like a ton of nosy questions but NOLA is a very intricate place with totally different areas just blocks apart.
#1- EXACTLY where is his job going to be? He actually will be in downtown New Orleans
#2- what type of lifestyle are you looking for? family based suburb, new construction, bohemian semi-urban, gritty urban, urban chic, Artsy.. Definitely family based suburb (we're from the country!)
#3-- Children? schools are the driving force of why many many people live where they do here in the city. We do not have any children so this isn't a big issue right now
#3-- is DH willing to commute? He is willing to commute but one of the "conditions" of his job is that he is within 1 hour or 50 miles of his office
#4-- are you going to work if so what/where? I am an accountant and definitely plan on working but the where part is very much up in the air! (I will be looking at downtown as well)
Thanks again!
LSU- would this area also be within 50 miles/1 hour of downtown New Orleans? Based on what you've said it sounds like it's a suburbs-like area, right?
Thank you for your help! You ladies are giving me some wonderful starting points!
LSU- thank you so much!
You ladies are wonderful!
My parents and my sister have never had flooding problems in Luling. There are some areas that did get some water, but it is mainly a house issue and there was not significant flooding there during Katrina. I would recommend the neighborhoods Willowdale, Willowridge, Davis Plantation, Lakewood, or Mimosa Park. Just make sure the house you buy has never flooded before and you should be fine unless there is a major major storm. There is also a new subdivision right by the Luling/Destrehan bridge that is really big and really nice but I forgot the name.
I also (like LSU) bought a house in Covington. The commute is a little further and not as pleasant, but definitely do-able. And, like she said, the prices are more reasonable on the Northshore in St. Tammany. So the northshore might also be an option to look into.
i hope you find the right place!!
if he has to be at work within an hour of a call at times I would say that the north shore ( covington mandeville slidell) are not a good idea. as lovely as they are you really do not want him to get a call and discover as he hits the causeway that they are platooning cars. A friend almost lost her job because her usual hour long commute turned into a 3 hour nightmare twice in one week.
Harahan and River Ridge are very nice, fairly centrally located and a reasonable commute to many of the better schools. for family oriented suburban areas that did not flood Metairie and kenner near the river as well as some areas on the westbank.
The most important thing is, before you buy a house is to look, not just at the house next door but the houses three blocks over. It is very common to have a 5 million dollar house on St. Charles that is 4 blocks from a crime ridden low income area.
New Orleans is a great place to live, I hope you are happy here. however, with the cost of insurance and the upfront costs of a home I would suggest renting for the first six months until you get a feel for the area and decide exactly where you want to be.
Thanks, ladies. You all have certainly given me a lot to consider. I'm finding it a lot easier to find houses on the Northshore but I can definitely see your point about the commute. I also look at it this way: every minute my DH has to spend in the car is another minute we have to be apart. I'm definitely going to be looking at the other areas that you all mentioned!
My DH and I really wanted to buy right away but I see the point about renting as well. We know that we'll be in NOLA for 5 years (at least) but beyond that, we're not sure where they'll send him. We figured we'd buy right off the bat and start that investment!
Thanks again for all of your help. If the people in NOLA are like you ladies--I'm going to have no problem adjusting!
