5 random facts

How about we share 5 random facts about ourselves?  Keeping it shorter than the 20 or 25 or whatever it was on facebook... se we don't have too many to read through.  But if you want to share more, feel free to do so!

Re: 5 random facts

  • 1. I developed a fear of getting on escalators (going down) in my early 20s.  Even now most times my heart races a little before I step on, and sometimes it feels similar to jumping in during a game of double-dutch.  I absolutely cannot get on if I am wearing heels - I have to search for an elevator or stairs.  This fear started without any incident that caused it.  But my mom also has this same anxiety about escalators, so maybe I somehow "learned" it from her?

    2. I am wondering recently if I end up attracted to "wounded" men who have some self-esteem issue, either from their childhood or from something current.

    3. I've always wanted to dye part of my hair purple or blue, but never got up the nerve.  Now my fashion sense and identity seems too established in a way that would not match with that kind of hair.  Also being 35 I would feel sillier than if I did it at 25.

This is hard, I can't really think of any more...

    4. My favorite non-alcoholic drink is Arizona's green tea with honey, but I never drink it because of the sugar.

    5. I am profoundly attracted these days to all children and young things ... children from 0 to even 12/13, puppies, and kittens.

  • 1.  I hate (seriously HATE) ketchup.

    2.  I was a tap dancer for 18 years.

    3.  I am a bartending school graduate.

    4.  I have a weird aversion to people touching my face.

    5.  I want to go back to school (again) for another degree.

  • 1.  I hate to work...but can't seem to stop!  I have always had at least two jobs since I was 21.  Waitressing, retail, construction, teaching, secretary, airlines (ramp and agent), fast food, artist, nail technician.....I have done just about everything that would interest me.  I look forward to the day when I don't have to work at all....but with the economy being the way that it is currently....my carefree worry free life won't start any time soon.  I am addicted to working even though I hate it.  And everytime I think I might slow down, I go out and get another job.

    2.  I get anxiety about nothing at all and every thing in between.... or it could just be from not having a day off but lately I can't quite pinpoint my anxiety though.  It is completely random when I get it.....but it does go away eventually...a nice long drive or walk on the beach with my guys.

     3.  I love to paint, it is very therapeutic for me....acrylic only.  The bigger the canvas the better.  I haven't had time to paint in the past year but I have several blank canvases waiting for me in my storage :)

     4.  I love to sing, I have my own Karaoke system with surround sound.  I was in my high school choir for 4 years and took voice lessons, sang for talent shows (never won any).  I think I have a decent voice, people request for me to sing in bars and at parties and I usually can get a free drink or two if I sing to the right guy (my hubby) :)

    5.  I am born and raised in Honolulu but I call Maui my Home :)

Well....everyone else in my life loves it so my stepdaughter, Queen of All Things Ketchup, received the chips!  I would never eat them, but did find them VERY cool!  And, I took extra care of them so they wouldn't get crushed on the way home!

  • 1. I used to be a competitive figure skater, in my youth

    2. there were 79 kids in my graduating class in high school.  I went to a small, independent private college prep in San Francisco.

    3. I know the intricacies of 17th and 18th century "fan language" and have used it!  I also know how to page a train on a gown, sit in a boned corset and courtsey like a peasant and a noble.  LOL!

    4. I have three adopted siblings...a sister who's 15 (she's an Alaska Native...inuit and deaf) and two brothers who are 10 and 6 (they are biological brothers).

    5. I have a twin brother, a younger half brother (who's only 16 months younger), a step-sister that is one year older and a step-brother who's one year younger.  My half-brother and step-brother are the same age and have the same name.

  • Fun!  I always thought the FB one was too long.

    1. My hair has been these colors: blonde, orange, red, half blond/half black, and long blond chunks in the front.  When I turned 30, I stopped coloring my hair (and it has become a natural dark dark brown) and have recieved the most compliments.

    2. I've run a naked 5k called the Bare Buns Fun Run at a local nudist community.  I was dared by a fellow running friend who was turnign 50 and wanted to do it for her 50th birthday.  It has been the one and only time I have won first place in my age group for a running race.  :)  And, yes, all I had on were my running shoes and a pair of socks.  Oh, and sunglasses.  Cool

    3. I have 9 piercings - 4 in each ear and a belly ring.  (Hmm, added to the hair colors above, I would suspect I was a 90s punk but that's so not the case Stick out tongue ).

    4. I was actually scared of dogs before we got one.  And now I drool over dogs more so than babies.

    5. I drive a stickshift and actually love it.  MH calls me Mario Andretti (although the car is old now, so she doesn't have much pick up and go anymore).

is that 7 total siblings then?  wanted to make sure my counting was right.  Wow!  I'm assuming your half-brother and step-brother have the same name because the step-brother came into the family with that name?  What did you all call them?

and what do you mean "page a train in a gown"?  Like flag a train down?  Something to do with the train of the gown?  I'm assuming it's something you learned while in opera...

  • LOL I don't know how much more I can say about myself that I haven't said before! Let's see...

    1. I didn't learn to drive a stick shift until I came to Australia, which meant I had to learn to drive stick AND drive on the opposite side of the road at the same time. It was...interesting......

    2. I went to the annual Renaissance Faire in SoCal every year until I was 20 or so. Have a costume and everything (may I say, the tatas look particularly splendid in one of those corsets!).

    3. I was homeschooled from 8-16, when I graduated and started college (I got my BA at 20). [Edit: I actually passed the CA tests and graduated at 14, but my mom didn't want me to start college at such a young age - so I waited an additional 2 years.]

    4. I once squashed a hamster in a book. My childhood copy of Beauty and the Beast still bears a mark where the poor thing peed in terror.

    5. I enjoy peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. I know it sounds disgusting, but seriously, don't knock it until you try it!

  • 1. I have this crazy way of addressing my fears/obstacles. I was scared of the ocean so I joined the Coast Guard. Sucked at math so I majored in Finance. Tired of being 'fat' so I signed up for a triathlon.  Scared of heights, went skydiving.

    2. In HS, I used to compete in bikini contests for cash...totally scandalous

    3. I think I'm having a midlife crisis...back in school for my MBA and have no clue what I want to do.

    4. When I was 11 I had a paper route but outsourced it to my brothers for $1/wk...they rolled, delivered and collected!  My mom was pissed when she found out.  Gotta love child labor!

    5. I dont' watch much TV but LOVE Desperate Housewives...I live for Sunday nights  Big Smile

Oh. My. God.  This is probably my favorite food....ever!!!!!  I always say the same thing to people....you are not allowed to knock it until you've tried it.  The salty/sour combo thing is just delish!  I totally thought this was just a thing in my family.  Nice to know I'm not the only one!

  • 1.  I have a phobia/anxiety about eating seafood.  I've never had lobster or shrimp (nor do I ever intend to).  I've had a few bites of fish in my life under extreme duress, but sincerely hope I never have to again.  Just the thought of it makes me nauseated.

    2. I am the Whack-A-Mole champion of the world! Seriously, I rock at this game, and have never lost against another player.

    3. I once had a part-time job running speed-dating events (yes, just like in ?40-Year-Old Virgin?, ?Hitch?, and other movies). Men and women would sign and up come to a bar, sit down and talk. After four minutes I would blow my whistle, and the men would move to the next station. With the exception of one or two at each event, the majority of the people were really nice and fairly normal. I even dated a few myself at one point.

    4. I have donated my eggs six times to six different couples anonymously.  I may have "genetic" children out there an not know it.

    5. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life and never intend to.

    Wow!  That's amazing!  Smile

    Mine are pretty boring...

    1) I have to floss every night or I can't sleep.

    2) I love Excel (the spreadsheet, but I like the gum, too!)

    3)  I am both a dog and cat person

    4) Eating dairy and wheat makes me gain weight so quickly, whereas I could eat my weight in rice or other grains without any problems.

    5) I think Korean food can create miracles because I was really sick during a trip to Seoul but one bowl of spicy tofu soup and my nasty cold was gone.

  • My 5:

    1. Like jujubee, I have a strange fear of escalators also. I can't quickly get on them like most others. I have to stop and wait until the right step comes along. This stems from my mother leaving me on the 2nd floor of Foley's (now Macy's) as a child. I will never forget the nice man that held my hand as he took me down the escalator.

    2. I didn't get the chicken pox until I was 20 years old.

    3. I wear contacts and I will not leave the house wearing glasses because my vision is so bad.

    4. I've never had a pedicure because I don't like people touching my feet.

    5. I am allergic to mangos, which I love anyway & will still eat regardless of the lovely rash I know I will get.

    This was hard!

  • 1.  my irrational phobia - roaches - just can't take them & if I see one, I am completely paralyzed with fear, run the other way while screaming for someone else to kill the roach.  I know I get this fear from my grandmother & I hope I don't pass it on to my kids!

    2.  my mom is gay  (while that is more of my mom's fact than it is mine, I think her being gay made me a lot more open minded & forgiving of others "not normal" situations, especially at a young age)

     3.  i am a diet coke fiene (I truly believe it is the elixir of the gods), but I have not had any since July!!  I know the aspartame is not good for me anyway, but since we are TTC, I have given it up.  And I really miss it...sometimes I even dream about drinking diet coke.  Oh yea, I was serious.

     4.  i have a grandpa, uncle, & cousin all named Charlie Brown.  (my grandpa & uncle came around before the comic & by the time my cousin was born, it was a tradition - though when he had a son, he didn't name him Charles)

    5.  i found my 1st gray hair when I was 15.  I plucked them until I was 20 & then caved & started dying my hair.  I am probably about 50% gray now & at 29, for me that is not okay!  I think silver hair is beautiful just not on me...yet!!

(that was tough...I can't imagine doing the longer ones on FB!)

  • 1. I have bizarre dreams at night, usually 2-3 per night.  Not scary, just weird; my subconcious must be very active.  MH is the opposite... he only dreams about everyday things like going to work or driving in the car.

    2. I love cereal, but I don't like sugared cereals because my mom never let us buy them when we were kids... except once a year, as a birthday present.  I still buy Lucky Charms once every few years, but other than that, it's pretty much Kashi, Grape Nuts and Cheerios.

    3. I worry more about losing my boss than losing my job.  My job would be a complete nightmare if I were working for someone else.

    4. I created several stations on Pandora.com that are filled with music other people like, so I can listen and be reminded of them.  Today I'm listening to "Mom Songs".

    5. I'm such a grammar nerd that I've considered buying The Elements of Style for home use.  It was a required text for my 12th grade English class and I miss it.

Yes, I totally LOL when I read about having to wait until the right step comes!  You are totally right, that is what I do too.  At least you have an incident that caused the fear, I feel so irrational in mine because there was no originating cause.

redshoe& lelekay - I knew a girl in elementary school that like PB & P sandwiches too, so I guess there are others out there!

OMG, fellow grammar-phile here, I love Elements of Style!!  The little gray book right?  Strunk & White?  I read it in college from beginning to end, and there were times it made me LOL.  Seriously, I was getting amused by grammar.  I'm a strange bird.

Oh, btw, I don't hold myself to strict grammar standards on these boards though... a la not underlining or italicizing the book title.  Here spelling is more important to me.  Though I did have the slightly obsessive need to correct myself on the knot yesterday because I put "to busy" or something like that.

Yes!  That's the one!  Just imagine... every letter and email I write could be a shining example of grammatical perfection.  Mr. Wishkoski would be so proud.

But I agree, perfect grammar on the boards isn't necessary.  Even I need a break sometimes!

  • Hm, this is gonna take some real thinking =)

    1. I'm severely allergic to alcohol. I get hives for up to a MONTH (the more I drink, the longer the hives last) and then I peel (ALL over my body like a snake shedding its entire skin) for several months afterwards. During that time, I exofoliate almost every day =P but the hives for the month part is pure torture, so that's why I don't drink anymore.

    2. When I was in 5th grade, I said that I hated computers & programming and the person who invented it (b/c my dad was forcing me to learn how to program) and I never wanted to do anything with computers when I grow up. Now I'm a software engineer =P

    3. My favorite food is (was--b/c of pg now) sushi. I love sushi so much that I once ate it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 2 days in a row. Since sushi restaurant don't open for breakfast, I had bought sushi-grade fish from Mitsuwa (Japanese supermarket) and made my own. Of course, I couldn't keep eating sushi every meal b/c it got a lil expensive...but I would never get sick of it if I could...

    4. I once dated a guy who hit me with his car (I was a pedestrian, he was driving). I blamed my confusion on the accident =P

    5. Before MH, my average relationship was 2.5 months long (not including dating but actual exclusive relationships).

OMG me too! Only my list reads Kashi, Grape Nuts and Shredded Wheat. I think it's so weird that Ben loves Cocoa Pops and puts sugar on his cornflakes...and he thinks it's weird that I don't eat sugary cereal. Stick out tongue

Nah, I didn't kill-squash it. I was probably about 5 and it was running around on the floor and my mom told me to catch it - I had a copy of Beauty and the Beast (my lovely Michael Hague illustrated version, no less) open so I just reached out and snapped it shut around the hamster. The book wasn't heavy enough to kill it, it just literally scared the pee out of the poor little thing (and stunned it somewhat).
