Tongue Tied

I just gone done posting yesterday on the mommies to be weekly check in about how the swelling wasn't too bad... well, I must have jinxed myself b/c last night I woke up in the middle of the night because my hand was tingly (like it had fallen asleep) and it was because both my hands were super swollen! I checked and my feet were really swollen too and I am starting to get cankles Crying

I panicked and took my wedding ring and e-ring off immediately - it took some twisting and turning and I had to work at it a bit but thankfully I was able to get them off...  I know if I continue to wear them they're bound to get stuck if my fingers get any more swollen! Now I'm sad I can't wear them anymore Sad

I am trying to drink more water now but it doesn't help that I spend a good part of the day on my feet (I start cutting back to 4 days a week at work next week though so that should help).... I wonder how much worse it's going to get in the next 5 1/2 weeks???

Re: s w e l l i n g

  • Jaime, do you have a BP cuff? The suddeness of the swelling is little worrisome. If you don' have one, maybe you can go to CVS or a grocery store that has one of those things where you can check your BP? It's probably nothing, but sudden/extreme swelling can be a sign of pre-e. That was my only warning sign before I got it (my BP was fine the day before I had to deliver, but the weekend before, I had serious swelling, even in my face and arms). I'm not trying to scare you, but you probably want to rule that out.
  • DH asked me right away if my BP was normal - it was checked on Monday and was just fine.  I really didn't have very much water intake yesterday b/c I was so busy at work, so I am hoping it is just that... so I drank a TON of water today... it's not much better but it's also not worse.... but you are right, it's probably good just to check and be sure.... I'll go to CVS or something tomorrow just to check! (or should I go tonight?) thanks for the concern :)
  • If you don't have any other weird symptoms (blurry vision, epigastric pain) you can probably wait until tomorrow. Maybe you can see your ob's office Monday to check your urine for protein? For me, the swelling came and went...my BP was fine the day before I had Marino (I had a growth u/s and everything was perfect) and the next night my BP was 214/115. Just keep an eye out for weird symptoms and let your doc know. If it was summer, it might not be as strange...is it hot there in TX now?
  • Oh no =( Sorry to hear about the swelling. I didn't even realize that it happens when you get pg and to the pt where you had to take off your ring too =( I hope the swelling goes down soon and I hope you feel better. Lots of vibes your way...

  • they just checked my urine on Monday, no issues... I will watch for any other signs...but yes, it's still pretty hot here in Dallas! It was about 80 today.
  • Ah, well heat + carrying a baby can cause the swelling...I was thinking of our weather here (60ish). But definately call your ob and let them know so they can keep an eye on you and check your BP tomorrow.

  • I had really, really bad swelling as well.  Are you have any headaches?

I didn't even look like myself when I was admitted for my hyertension.  I still can't fit my engagement ring on:-(  Try to cut back on the salt (it's hidden everywhere!!)

    Hi Jaime

I thought the same thing immediately when I read your post.  You received great advice from Marino's mom. Pls take care.  Maybe elevated your legs when you're able to sit down also.

  • nope, no headaches....and I am trying to sit when I can and elevate my legs when possible.  i'll keep everyone posted!
  • Hope your swelling has gone down and that you're doing well Jaime.

  • I bloat like you wouldn't believe - when I get my period, my hands swell up so much that my rings hurt. With this pregnancy, I'm already swollen - earlier this week, I had to take my wedding and engagement rings off (some days I can still squeeze them on, other days I don't even think about trying). I drink tons of water, watch my salt intake, etc - I'm just a naturally bloaty person, I guess. It's very depressing. Stick out tongue So I'm happy for you that you've made it this long without any problems - hopefully it will settle down a bit for you!
  • Eek!  Sounds scary!  I hope you are okay.  Sounds like some compression socks are in order if you're going to be on your feet all day.  I got some at Walgreens and wore them the entire time I was traveling in the UK...helped a ton, especially on those long days on my feet.  I plan to wear them later this month at our international convention.

You've gotten some sage advice from the other posts...I'd add in eating some asparagus...it's a natural diuretic and helps with swelling/bloat.   Feet up, tons of water intake and reduced sodium too...keep us posted!

  • just a quick update - still pretty swollen but did check my BP today and it was 115/77 so all is good :) guess I am just at that inevitable stage of pregnancy.... hopefully it doesn't get too much worse over the next few weeks.....

thanks for all the advice! :)

  • YAY for a good BP and no other symptoms!  Have a good weekend!

Glad to hear everything is ok.  My hands have been bad for awhile, but mostly it goes away during the day - but this past week it hasn't been.  My doc told me to cut down on sodium and carbs (which I'm trying to do, but having had a work shower on Friday and another one yesterday, it was too tough).  I also might go get a wrist brace for sleeping because he told me that helps too.

Oh and I haven't been able to wear my rings for months.  :(   The worst part is that my hands feel really arthritic most of the time too, so I"m trying to elevate them as well!
