feeling down and defeated

I've been trying to breastfeed since Peyton has been in the hospital. She has not been latching, I tried with the nipple shield and it worked a couple of times but still not latching on. I feel that i'm not producing enough milk for her and have to top up with formula. I've been pumping and still not enough milk for one feeding. Not looking for any advice I just needed to vent thanks for reading.

Re: feeling down and defeated

  • It is a frustrating thing sometimes.  Hang in there.  It is ok to supplement with formula, actually I have been told that sometimes it takes a bit to get your milk to really start producing enough for the baby.  There are things that you can take to produce more milk.  There are herbal and prescription meds that you can try.  Maybe mention it to your doctor?  Good luck!
  • Have you talk to a lactation consultant? If not I would recommend it.

When do you pump? Try pumping the first feeding when you get up for the morning. I pump 2 times a day (first thing in the AM and the last feeding of the night).

How do you feed? I feed on one side her feeding to make sure B gets a good balance of fore and hind milk. When I pump I pump off of the breast that he didn't eat on.

How long do you pump for? Try pumping for 10 minutes past the last drop of milk coming out.

At her age she requires very little milk so you should be producing enough. Make sure you drink a lot of water (like 12+ glasses a day) and try oatmeal (not instant). It should help to increase your supply. Also, the more she nurses the more it will increase your supply. She may be going through a growth spurt as well so she will be eating more often. Around that age B was eating every hour (it lasted for just a day or 2).

  • The first few weeks are the hardest! It will get easier, but it might not ever be easy. For me breastfeeding has been one problem after another. Early on I took fenugreek, blessed thistle, and domperidone to help my supply. I still take the domperidone. I worry every day about whether Andrew is getting enough to eat. I've supplemented with formula off and on since he was three days old.

Don't hesitate to get help. There's plenty of it out there. Try not to be too hard on yourself.

P.S. According to Kellymom, the amount you get from pumping is not a true reflection of your supply. The baby is more efficient than your pump at removing milk from the breast.

    *hugs* to you. Good luck!
