Anyone around?

I'm bored. I'm pretending to do work for grad school but I've worked for maybe a couple of hours and I'm getting restless.

My H is on an ER rotation and he'll be there until 1am. He's been there 5pm-1am for the past few nights. Is anyone else home tonight or am I the only person with no plans and home alone??

Re: Anyone around?

  • Just got here!  We were out during the day with friends (and then I needed a little TV time to recover).  Now I'm settling in for a quiet evening at home.  Dh is watching football so I'm bored.  Might try to do some homework to take the pressure off tomorrow.

    What is "match day?"

  • I am here. My DH is watching football with his friend, too.

Yay! I'm glad I'm not the only person doing homework.

Match Day is the day that 4th year med students find out what residencies they've been matched up with. It'll determine where we'll be living for the next 4+ years, so I can't wait to find out!!! It's absolutely killing me but there's nothing we can do but wait.

  • Ohh!  That is really exciting!  Do you apply for a variety and wait and see or is it totally at the mercy of the school?
  • 10 programs are included in the match program cost, so my H applied to 10 in NY and CT. He's going into psychiatry, which isn't considered a competitive field, so he didn't really need to apply to more places than that. If you want to apply to more than the included 10 programs, it can get pretty pricey.

The match program is basically a system run by a computer. Every hospital/residency program ranks its interviewed candidates, and each candidate ranks the programs. The match program has some crazy way of matching up programs to students, and on "match day," (the third Thursday of March), every 4th year med student gets an envelope and finds out where they've been placed. It's kind of scary to realize that our future is completely dependent on a somewhat random computerized system!

  • That sounds like a very exciting, nerve wracking time!

  • That is scary and exciting!  But I also could see it as being something where you just have a sense of peace about it.  You have no control, but you know you'll be together on a new adventure.  I sort of wish we were moving--and like the idea of it being fated.

What homework are you avoiding tonight?  I am dodging qualitative statistics and cognitive psychology, but I am going to try to squeeze out a little work on my year-long research project.  Not that you would know it by my Nest board stalking...

  • I'm here, at least for a minute.  We're about to start watching a bunch of old episodes of the office on sketchy Chinese video player websites in hopes of catching up by next Thursday, but my H is doing his usual nighttime dance of taking 15 MINUTES TO FLOSS HIS TEETH. Drives me insane.

I'm already having panic attacks about match day, and we've got 3 more years! I think we talked about this, CT, but at H's school the way they do it is you get up in front of your entire class (and everyone's families, the local news and basically anyone else who wants to watch) and open your envelope for the first time and announce what you got.  SO stressful.

I'm sorry but that's too funny. My H has a flossing thing too, except it's that he does it in our bedroom while watching TV. Not doing it in the bathroom skeeves me out but I don't want to make him self-conscious so I've never said anything about it haha.

Also, I didn't know that about your H's school - that's nuts!!! Way to add more stress to an already stressful situation. UConn has a big event in an auditorium I think, but as far as I know there are no camera crews. Still, every time I think about it I have a mini-panic attack and get both excited and really scared. I really hope we end up in NYC, but if we do that means that I'll have to go through the crazy NY State teacher certification crap, I'll have to go job hunting, and we'll have to pay probably about $1k more in rent than we do now, for about 1/4 the space that we currently have. Stress stress stress.

I was avoiding work for developmental disabilities class. The class is 2 1/2 hours every week, and my professor requires that everyone have 2 1/2 hours of "out of class engagement time" every week that's documented. I literally have to write how many minutes I spend reading the textbook chapter and write a response about it, then I have to find ways to use up the rest of the 150 minutes. He gives us a list of things to choose from every week, but it's such a pain to research stuff online, have to write about it, and time myself doing everything. I'm sure most people in the class just lie and make up how much time each activity took them to do, but I'm a goody two-shoes and I feel guilty lying.
