Mrsziz -- Sarah

Hey Sarah,

I hope you are enjoying your Hawaiian vacation with little Bella.  She is just too precious! It looks like the beach worked out while you were on the N.S.

So I was reading your blog...fill me in on the probiotics....I take them daily but are you giving it to Bella?  Ashton wakes up screaming and grunting during the night (not screaming so much now since I have cut out dairy for about a week now).

How much longer are you in the Islands?

Re: Mrsziz -- Sarah

  • Hey Renee! We started the probiotics 2 days ago and the results (so far) are amazing! We bought them from Down to Earth. I think they are working awesome, we are currently making them into a paste with water and feeding them to her on one of our fingers three times a day. Her poor belly was a mess! I can still cut out dairy if I need to but I read that if they have a dairy allergy they generally have a soy allergy too. I don't eat enough protein so I tend to get some protein from cheese.

We had a great time on NS! It was so relaxing! We're here until Wed. Where do you live? We're in our condo in Waikiki. I'd love to see you guys if possible but things are a little crazy. We're meeting up with some friends down here tomorrow. If you guys want to get out of the house you are more than welcome to come over and hang out! Ashton has SO much hair!! More than Bella! I thought she had a lot until I saw that new siggy pic of him.

How are things going since your mom left? Oh I wanted to tell you for me to shower, I put Bella in the bouncy seat and sit her on the bathroom floor. She likes the noise of the bathroom fan too :) Hope all is well!

  • Hey Sarah!

Can you explain the method of giving Bella the probioticsStick out tongue  Are they the capsules?  Made specifically for kinds? Do you use one pill for the entire day?  I am having a hard time not eating dairy. Luckily my Dr. told me that since it probably using an digestive problem and not a allergy per say that I need not cut out everything, just the main things like drinking a glass of milk, eating ice cream, etc.  I love cheese thou, so I am having a hard time finding what to eat since dairy is a huge part of my diet.

We live in Kapolei.  Things are crazy here too with my mom leaving. We have adjusted pretty good so far.  Ashton had a screaming fit this afternoon so I spend a lot of time in the bathroom with the hair dryer going. He loves it and shuts up every time I turn it on.  We are now trying to figure out why Ashton screams while he is in his car seat.  It's getting worse and he cries so hard he stops breathing for a few seconds....thus my point on that I probably won't head to Waikiki on my own:-(  Any times for that one?  I just ordered a noise CD (vacuum noises etc. to play in the truck).  Oh and now Ashton is not taking the playtex drop in bottle. He did so good for those few days he had to.  It's making me a tad nervous since I will be going back to work soon.  I hate the thought of him crying all day..especially since I don't have daycare lined up yet.

Oh and I already have the bouncy seat set up in the bathroom:-)  I did that one night while my parents stayed in Waikiki since I was home alone with Ashton.  He likes the bouncy seat for about 15 mins which is perfect!

If I don't get to see you, enjoy the rest of your trip!!! Try to relax as much as possible.

Hopefully you'll have some advise or another mommy will jump in for my car seat, probiotic questions and now my bottle failure question:-)

  • Okay so sorry to butt in, but I wanted to say that Jaylee had the same problem with the bottle and the car seat. We just kept trying the bottle for a few more days. IT actually ended up working, a friend of ours had the same problem by LO won't take the playtex bottle so she had tried the avent bottles and her LO was fine...

The car seat on is scary. Jaylee will be fine for all of 10 minutes then she starts crying so hard she starts to choke on her saliva. I usually ride in the back with her so I pop a bottle in and she if okay, if it's just me i have to either pull over or wait till i'm at a light to pop the bottle in. Also playing the noise CD works wonders too,

Hope that things get better for you. I hear the carseat problem should (well that's what everyone keeps telling me)..

  • ***butting in***

Check out the Breastfeeding Board on The Bump for more feedback and tips...I have been lurking there and the girls are great!

As for bottles, have you tried First Years Breastflow?  They mimic the action of breastfeeding and are more akin to how the baby nurses at the breast.  My BFF is EBF except when she's at work and they use the Adiri Bottles.  Her son is 14 months now and has had no problems going between the boob and the breast.

As for the dairy thing...OY!  I am sad that I will have to cut it out when BF.  Seems so unfair! Ah well, I figure it will not only help my LO nurse but it will help me drop some lbs. quicker.  For protein I eat egg whites...you can hard boil eggs for a quick snack (I skip the yolks) or scramble them.  You can even stir them into oatmeal to add protein...you don't taste them at all and you get the added protein.  Other sources are fish, chicken and turkey for me.  Good luck ladies...I am sure I'll have tons of questions for you in time!

  • The probiotics are a powder that comes in a jar. I put a drop of water in a cup then pour a little powder in there until it becomes pasty like. I scoop the paste onto my finger and stick my finger in her mouth, she sucks away! I don't measure it but the jar says to start with 1/2 teaspoon once a day and then you can increase to 1/2 teaspoon 3 x a day if needed. We split the 1/2 teaspoon dose (or about a 1/2 tsp, like I said we don't measure) into 3 x a day. I'm still eating dairy just not as much as I used to. I try to only have one dairy item per meal so I don't overload her system in case that's the cause. Although, like I said, she's a whole new kid since I started the probiotics! Better for her and for us!!

We talked about coming out to the outlet malls, if we do, should I call you. Are you near there? Isn't the new target over there?

Bella screams in her car seat too. I think she hates the tightness of the straps because when she's awake she LOVES stretching! She sticks her belly and her chest out and then stretches out her arms and legs, it's so cute BUT the car seat won't allow her to do that. So needless to say when she's awake in the seat, she's usually not a happy camper :) I wouldn't say it's gotten better, I would say we've gotten more used to it so it doesn't bother us as much as it did early on. We also make it a point to take her out of the seat asap, even if we go to the grocery store. We park, take her out of the seat and then go shopping. That way she's happy and our life is better :)

As for the bottle. Bella finally took the playtex drop in bottle. It took a few times (maybe 3 and then she took it). We were doing it about every other day. Then we came here and didn't do it for about 4 days and she refused it again! Ryan finally got her to take it again yesterday. I think because we quit she boycotted it! I think the key is persistence. So now we are back to giving it to her every other day or every day. I pump in the morning after her morning feed and her gives her that milk then I pump again when he bottle feeds her. We also found that running the nipple under warm water helped.

We tried the breastflow bottles that Lori mentioned and she would scream the entire time every time we tried them. Come to find out they are REALLY difficult for baby to suck the milk out of because MOST women have a slower let down. I have a VERY quick letdown (( a matter of seconds) so it would pi$$ Bella off that it was so much work to get the milk out.

Bella likes her bouncy seat for about 15 mins too, just long enough for a nice hot shower :) She JUST started liking the swing before we left and every once in awhile she likes the playmat with the mobile that's attached to it! I'm thankful that we got all that stuff used because I would've hated to buy it all brand new for so much $$ for her not to like it. It's trial and error that's for sure! We tried the swing once a day for about 10 mins and after about 5 mins she'd cry then one day she stayed in there for 30 without crying!

Lori- you don't have to cut dairy out to start, you can eat it unless there's  a problem and it's just one of the million things you can eliminate to see if it helps. I eliminated green leafy veggies and broccoli first because those are also a known gas cause. I would say if you notice baby to be gassy or fussy take a look at your diet, otherwise, eat up :)

  • Sarah- thanks for the probiotic info.  I am sending Adam to pick it up from Down to Earth since he is right by there watching the football game. We are about 10 mins or so from the outlets.  Let me know what day you are going and I will see if we will make it. Yes, we have a Target but there is also one in Salt Lake. I like the one in Kapolei better thou:-)

Glad to hear I am not alone with the car seat thingy.  I will give it time.  Ashton loves to stretch too.  I think just being confined in it pi**ses him off:-)  As soon as I start to undo the buckles he knows and starts to quiet down.

As for the bottles, we have bought every single bottle expect the Avent brand.  The nipple looks just like the Medela so I didn't want to spend the money. We tried the Playtex dropin again last night since he did take it before.  We are just going to keep trying daily in hopes it works.

Lori, Sarah is right...no need to cut anything unless the baby is having a hard time.  I check the breastfeeding board daily as they have great advice.  You should also bookmark Kellymom.com.  I have learned so much from both places.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I fogot to mention with the playtex drp inns.. jaylee did not like the regular nipples the bottles came with so we go the natural latch ones ( the ones that have little rigids in it) and she LOVED those... you might want to try those
  • Bella only likes the slow flow latex ones, she hates the stiff white ones, so you may just try a different playtex nipple since you already have the bottle.

I've also read that you should try it and if they gag or get really worked up then wait 15 mins to try again. I would say commit to one bottle for about a week and try it every day or every other day for a week. That's what we did with Bella. We tried the breastflow bottle every other day for a week and a half then tried the playtex until she took it on the third try. Good luck!

  • Hello! Sorry to butt in... We just gave Alexa her first bottle last night using Avent bottles. She took it easily. Of course we gotta make a habit out of this before I can totally recommend... But it seems to work so far!

Now I'm off to check out Sarah's blog!
