Anyone's pet ever had fleas? Help!

We found a flea on Lindsey, our mini dachshund, yesterday. We immediately gave her a bath and at least four fleas fell off of her during the bath. I am blaming myself because I knew I had skipped a dose of her flea meds because of our move and I kept procrastinating and putting it off. I guess this is what I get.

We bought flea shampoo and washed her and then bought carpet/upholstery flea and tick killer to spray on our couches, furniture, and area rugs. But I worry about using too much because it's unclear on how it actually works (says it lasts for 7 months). Does that mean the chemical clings to the material, because if so, I am worried about Leah being around it. Also, what else should I be doing to prevent anything else? I tossed the dog's bedding and bleached most of what had been in contact with her for the past two days, but the advice online is so conflicting. I haven't seen a tick anywhere since the ones last night washed off. Should I hope for the best and leave it with what I've done for now?

Any advice is appreciated :).

  • For getting rid of live fleas (but not the eggs, sorry) in between chemical treatments, wash your dog with regular Dawn dish soap. It won't harm your dog and it doesn't have nearly as many chemicals. There is something about the Dawn brand that the fleas don't like. Oh, and go out and get some Frontline and stop putting it off :-)

Yeah, I put the Frontline on her yesterday as soon as I saw the fleas. I knew it would come back to bite me! I have been religiously putting it on her every month and of course the one month I skip, she gets fleas. Grr! I will try the Dawn trick.

  • We adopted our puppy Tera 9 days ago and she had flea's when we got her. The shelter she was at didn't give preventative treatment. Here is what we did to avoid spreading the fleas into the house and other places:

-The day we picked her up she got frontline (a saturday)

-When she came home she was either in her crate in the garage or in the backyard (fenced). She wasn't allowed in the house, and after we spent time with her we stripped down in the garage and put our clothes right into the laundry and then took a shower.

-on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I spent hours using a flea comb going through her hair and killing the fleas each time I found them.

-Monday she got a flea bath and serious brush out at the groomer

-Monday night she was able to come into the house after us washing and  drying on high heat her blankets, etc.

-As of now we haven't seen any fleas in many days.

This worked for us, but your situation is a little different since she is already in your home. I would say limit your contact with her and if possible and if she uses a crate, put it in the garage or basement. Don't waste your money on an exterminator coming to clear your house. You can buy sprays that work just as well (as some neighbors told us). If you gave her the treatment then things should start to die off. However, flea eggs or larva can lay dormant for almost a year, so keep on top of things in your house and with your pups treatment. Good luck with everything, fleas are a pain in the butt, but fairly easy to take care of.

ETA: I say just read the label about the spray treatments and if they say anything about things being toxic.

Haha, figures. That seems like something that would happen to me!

  • If you have carpet in the house i'd recommend doing a quick steam clean of the carpets.  The machine will suck up any fleas and eggs in the carpet.  We had a dog growing up that had a ton of them and the only way we could get rid of the ones in the house was to steam clean the carpets and then keep up with the flea treatments on the dog.  GL!
  • If you try and vaccuum up the fleas, make sure to change your vaccuum bag frequently. Take those little buggers outside, so they don't try and get back into your house.

  • Do you go to Drs. Mac & M?  I thought you mentioned that once.  Anyway, Lily had fleas two weeks ago.  The fall is flea season and they're all over outside.  The dogs use Sentinel (the flea & heartworm combo) but it only steralizes adult fleas.  Dr. Mac gave me Vectra 3D (said that fleas are slowly becoming immune to Frontline) and told me that a couple of fleas will not lead to an infestation at home.  Since DH is an exterminator I was going to have him spray the entire house.  Dr. Mac told me to not bother.  If you do have the house treated you all need to be out of the house for about 4 hours so the chemicals can dry, then they're safe.  Anyway, I bet she just brought a few in from outside.

  • Thanks, ladies. Jen, I do go to Drs. Mac and M but I haven't called them yet because I have been so busy with Leah. I checked and her flea meds are actually Vectra 3D, not Frontline, so I'm glad to hear he said that. I haven't seen a flea since I sprayed yesterday so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it was a fluke...yuck.
  • Yes, he said that I didn't have to worry about treating the house, just the dog.  Thank god b/c I spend a fortune every time I visit them!  I love them but holy cow, I think I'm making their volvo payments!

Agreed. I love them and they are awesome vets, but they make a killing off of us!
