Looking forward to jury duty

I got off the hook for our Ireland trip but I have been recalled. I got one of those deals I can call in at 5:00pm to see if I need to come in tomorrow.

I know my job stinks when my first thought is, "Oh please please please pick me! Right here! Me! Me!" because I'll get out for a day.

For those who have been called to thier civic duty, how do you dress for jury duty? Can I wear jeans? I want to show some reverence for the judicial system but I also want to be comfortable.

Do you think what you wear influences if you get picked? Because I'm trying to find an outfit that says, "I'm a white, early thirties, middle-middle-class female with moderate political tendencies, but with both conservative and liberal leanings depending on the issue...with a dash of hip-ness."

Ideas?

I hope I get picked so I can bring my laptop and just sit there and write.

Re: Looking forward to jury duty

  • I think when I got called to jury duty, though I ended up getting out of it since I was breastfeeding.  The paperwork in Cumberland County anyway stated no shorts and no jeans.  I would say business casual would be acceptable dress.  As far as trying to find an outfit that says everything you want it to say should be fun, as I have no suggestions.

  • I checked the website and it says no shorts or halter tops. And if you've seen some of the city folk of Reading, no tank tops is an excellent call.

My juror number is 31 so I'm thinking I'm probably going to have to go. I am already planning my snackers and where I'm going for lunch. Civic duty vacation day! Wheeee!

  • Is it bad that I just had fun planning your outfit in my head? I think that darkwash wide leg denim pants (the thicker sort, not jeans) with a fitted white button down, scarf or pashmina, mid-sized hoop earrings, and low-key hair (don't spike it if it's short, loosely pulled back if it's long) would do the trick quite nicely.  Bonus points for plastic-framed glasses that you can bust out to look serious Stick out tongue

  • Heehee. This reminds me of me last year when I had jury duty.  I totally wanted to get called and miss a few days of work.  I had to show up, but I didn't get picked for a case, so I was out by lunch.  I think I just dressed business casual, then regretted it when everyone else was in jeans.  I'd leave the laptop home. They won't let you bring it in with you and I wouldn't want to let it sit in the jury room.

If it's anything like my experience, the jury selection process will be plenty entertaining on its own.  They just call everyone into the court room and start asking the questions- have you ever been arrested, do you have anything against police, have you ever been the victim of a crime, is there any reason why you're too important to spend a few days on a jury, etc.  People just stand up and answer these questions in front of everyone and oh the stories they tell to a roomful of strangers!  It's better than TV, I tell you.  Keep an eye on the people who stand up for every question.  It's especially fun to watch their faces when they find out they got picked for a jury anyway.

  • In Lancaster, if you show up in jeans, you are sent home to change and expected to come back or I believe you get fined. They also do their jury selection by papers we fill out, not by our appearance since the lawyers never see us before hand, and we didn't stand in front of everyone to answer the questions.

I'd also double check that you can bring your laptop. I'm not sure if that's permitted or not since we weren't even allowed newspapers.

  • Civic duty vacation day is off! Sad

I called and they said no jurors are to show up. What are the chances? Stay tuned for the next 180 days when they can call me back.

RaeAnt, sounds like Lancaster means business! I think that's the strictest I've heard.

And Pookie, oh Reading how I love thee and thy wacky residents.
