so much stuff!

Last night my husband and I continued with our latest hobby: Organizing our apartment.

C has been living here for 6 years.

I moved in about 9 months ago (I can't believe it's been so long!). I had lived in a bunch of different places and tried not to have too much stuff. When I packed up my last apartment I gave lots of things to charity, although C kept complaining that I have so much and I won't get rid of anything. My stuff is unpacked (except for a few pictures) and we started using our wedding gifts. But, the apartment feels so cluttered and full and it doesn't feel like there's any room in here - and it's a big place.

So last night we cleaned out one of the hallway closets. I thought it only had cleaning supplies in it. Boy was I surprised when C just kept removing things from the closet. I can't even believe how much he was able to fit in there. It's like the closet of necessities from Harry Potter. Or maybe it opens in to Narnia. The man has so many things!!! Sleeping bags and sports equipment and blankets that you put on furniture when you move and lights for fixtures we don't have. It's insane!! The man has no joke - 6 work bags (he's a phys ed teacher and brings laptop bags to work), 5 pairs of winter gloves, 7 rain coats.

He wants to keep all the rain coats "in case someone comes over and needs a raincoat". And also, "that one folds up really small so it's good for traveling". Fine, have 1 or 2 extra ones. But not 7.

I also found out that we've been storing boxes filled with styrofoam.

At a certain point, I had to leave the room and take some deep breaths.

I can't believe he's been making me feel like the packrat! I feel like we're never going to get rid of all this clutter. I need a TV show to come in here and help!

Re: so much stuff!

  • Is "Hoarders" still taking apps?

  • I feel your pain. It's amazing how much stuff you acquire over the years. Mike and I have been in the same apt for about 5 years and we just found out a couple of days ago that we'll be moving...next week! Our friends tease us that they're not sure our 1 bdrm apt will fit into our new 3 bdrm house. The thought of cleaning, organizing, and packing everything in the next 9 days is a bay overwhelming to say the least!
  • Mamie - he is so delusional. He gets really upset if I tell him he hoards things. He thinks he throws things away. I'm going to DVR some of those shows and show him and see what he says. What's the name of the one where you make the Keep Toss Sell piles on tarp?

Chrissy - that's so exciting that you're moving! My advice is to get help moving. I takes me a long time to pack my own things, but I've packed up whole rooms for other people in an hour flat.

Ok, y'all need to keep talking because I'm really trying to sit still and write today and I need to click back here every so often. Please help!

  • Is it "Clean House"? It might be on HGTV. DH hoards clothes. I keep encouraging him to sort through old clothes (think stuff from high school). No man should own light-wash jeans from the early 90s!!

  • Clean Sweep... I actually submitted my grandma to that show once but nothing came of it.

Chrissy - where are you moving to?

  • Mamie - if W decides to regrow his shag, at least he'll have pants to match his look!

Hawkilady - We're staying in San Diego, just moving from our 1 bedroom apt to a 3 bedroom house with double the square footage and a HUGE yard. I can't even begin to tell you how excited we are!

  • So true, C. I got the boy out of the redneck town, but I can get the redneck out of him.

  • It looks like both Clean Sweep and While You Were Out have been canceled. I love those shows. We don't have enough stuff to be eligible for Clean House - those houses are crazy! It's a sad day when there's no tv show that can help you.

Although, I'm toying with the idea of asking some of the new people we've met who live really close by to go on Trading Spaces with us.

Chrissy - are you working full time right now? Can you take time off for the packing?

Mams - I can't believe your husband has those jeans. Do they even fit anymore?

This morning we saw our maintenance guys because there was a leak in the shower. We told them that they'll have to excuse the huge mess in the apartment. They were teasing C that I'm going to throw out all his things because that's what all women do. One of them said that he has 1 shelf in his apartment and that's all. I'm really not planning on getting rid of all his things, but if it's crowded with 2 of us, how the heck are we gonna have a kid or 2 in this place??

  • I won't let him wear them! Sometimes I think he keeps them around just to push my buttons. They probably do fit. But I tend to make sure he has a lot of jeans that he won't ever feel like they're his only option. I've done wonders for his wardrobe, but it's still not great. Sad

THat's great!  Congrats on the new place!

  • Mamie - Some should "accidentally" happen to those jeans so that he can never wear them. Perhaps they "accidentally" disappear... or they "accidentally" end up in the washing machine with the white clothes and get covered in bleach spots... or they "accidentally" find themselves in the way of your scissors!

Zee - I have no clue how I'm going to find time to get everything done before we move. I work full time, train part time, and I'm currently taking pre-req classes for my real estate license that have me in school all day Saturday and Sunday. I won't even be there on moving day! I just started my job a year ago and have used all of my vacation time (and then some) for the wedding. My only option to have time off is to take it without pay, which I can't really afford to do because this move has been REALLY expensive. DH thinks he can get time off to pack, etc, but I don't know if I trust him to do the job without my supervision!

  • If you want to fly me to San Diego, I'd be happy to pack up your place.

That sounds crazy stressful. Can you have a packing party? You buy pizza and beer and your friends/family come over and help you throw things in boxes.

Good news: we're down to 4 raincoats! One for his car, 1 regular, 1 fancy, and 1 warm and fancy. Can you tell he was a boy scout? Sadly, he was only in for like, a month - but it was enough time for the hoarding philosophy to infiltrate.
