do you take food to the movies?
Tonight we went to see Up (it only recently came out here, and yes I cried...twice).
I took my own snacks because the little theater here doesn't stock the kind I like right now, which is basically anything super sour. However, I'll also admit that I've taken in my own candy before as well - I'll buy popcorn there, but balk at the price of peanut M&Ms. I know this is totally against the rules, but those things are freaking expensive and tickets are already $15 each and I'm a tightwad.

Re: do you take food to the movies?
Oh, I totally take my own snacks! I generally carry around a backpack or a largish handbag so I smuggle in my malteasers or whatever in there. Their snack prices are redonkulous! Highway robbery even! They deserve to have us smuggle in our own food
We'll get popcorn from them though. I don't really feel like lugging around my own microwave just so I can zap my own microwave popcorn.
Speaking of movie popcorn, I miss going to the movies in Canada! Their popcorn station, where there are various flavours one can shake onto popcorn, kicks Aussie theatre popcorn!
LOL yeah, but do you really think Aussies would go for that? They tend to be a bit wary of shaking things up like that lol.
The thing I miss about popcorn in the USA is that it's always hot. I don't know what it is here, but every theater I've ever been to in Australia only has lukewarm popcorn. It's like once it's popped, they don't really keep it above room temp. Petty, I know!
YES! If I want food, I always bring my own. The snacks they sell are overpriced, but I'm more concerned about their gargantuan size. Don't get me wrong, I like candy. But do I really need to eat 3x the normal amount of it?!
I bring a granola bar, or if I really want candy we'll stop at the gas station and I'll buy a regular-size treat. If I decide right there at the movie that I want some candy, I get Reese's Pieces. Those are the only candy that I am guaranteed NOT to finish, even halfway, before the movie is over.
We take our own snacks, too!
Usually, it'll be some sort of sour candy and/or Japanese Rice Crackers. Yummmmmmy!
I still haven't seen UP yet!! I keep hearing how good it is. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD ;D
Lisa, I LOVE LOVE the movies. If I could go every day, I would. There's something so different and better about being in the theater versus my living room. At home, I get distracted so easily, its not fun to watch a movie with me at home. I blame my chubby body on the movies. I love the popcorn so much. We'll even get the popcorn if we've just gone to dinner. I purposely don't eat much at dinner so I have an appetite for popcorn. But at $9.75 a ticket, we don't go as often as I would like.
So in answer to your question, as I veered off the topic......I get so excited talking about the movies! I don't eat candy much. I go in waves and sadly right now, I'm on one of the waves. But I never eat the candy at the theater. I will buy MH some from time to time, but usually he just sticks to popcorn. I have NO issues with folks bringing in their own snacks. Because really, the theater is killing us on the ticket price.
So I am going to confess something.......OMG, I hate to admit this but when we go to the movies, we try and movie hop! So you think its bad bringing in snacks, well then I'm the ultimate sinner.
I'm not big on snacking at the movies. If I'm with someone that wants popcorn we will get that and maybe a soda - both things are kind of hard to bring in.
The new mall movie theater in town is right next to a jamba juice so I always try to sneak that in (yes, SNEAK - they are super mean and strict about outside food).
What do you mean movie hop? Is it when you see one movie and then stay for a later one? If so I've ALWAYS wanted to do that, but I'm too afraid to get caught.
As for the original question. I like to bring my own food. I've brought in a blizzard a couple of times. (I lurve blizzards while watching movies!!). Our movie theatre allows you to bring in your own drinks now.

I always stop at the gas station on the way and get a bottle of water and Twizzlers, which they do sell at the movies, but for 3 times the price (or more!). I do buy popcorn on the few occasions I want it though!
I don't feel bad about this at all....they charge WAY too much!
The AMC theatres around here let you bring in food. They don't have big advertisements saying so, but I always have with the food in plain sight, and they never say anything. I really think it's their policy. They even have one of those before-movie advertisements at one theatre, the advertisement is from the Chipotle next door. The ad says why don't you stop by and get a burrito before the movie starts... I can't remember the exact wording, but it definitely implied that you should bring the food back into the theatre. The movie's going to start pretty soon anyway when they have those commercials, so that's what it has to mean, right?
AMC is the only theatres around here that let you do that though. I guess I'm lucky! I sort of took it for granted.
I voted for the 2nd option with YES b/c of price. In reality, it's a mix of #1 and #2 for me b/c the problem is not *just* the price. It's pricey foods that I don't even like to eat (btw, I don't like popcorn, except for kettle corn but they don't have that at the theatres). So I usually bring in things like a Jamba Juice or a falafel or sushi even
So it's all about the bang for the buck for me--I'm not gonna pay $3 for a bag of popcorn that I don't even like and I do like to eat or drink in the theatres.
I cried during Up too and MH and I had falafels in the theatres that time too...
Yep, we always sneak stuff in! Our theater is next to a Pricebusters, so we always stop in for movie-theater sized boxes of candy and bottled sodas. They totally market a ton of products to the movie-bound. We do buy movie theater popcorn on occasion, but we'll bring in our own kakimochi.
I once heard that concession prices are so high because theaters don't get to keep that much of the ticket prices for themselves -- so much of their profit comes from food and drink. Not sure about the accuracy about that, but if that is the case, I do feel a little badly for my neighborhood venue!
they were like that in AZ too - I always stopped and got a milkshake.
And the other brand of theaters (can't remember which) had this promo where you could get soda for $1 if you brought your cup back. My roommate was ALL about that deal and she was about the only person I ever went with, so we always did that.
oh - I really like the places that have food (dinner) as a fun treat.
We actually have a bargain place like that around here - they show pretty old new releases for $2 and then you can order food and drinks. Or we go on wednesdays for burger, beer, and movie night ($10). The "theater" is just a room full of loveseats, fluffy chairs, and cocktail tables.

That reminds me...we went to an AMC in NorCal and someone brought in a stinky fish sandwich. Yes, fish! It stunk up the entire theater and defnitely ruined the movie for us. So I think there should be a line of what is allowed in the theater.

This makes me wonder about food on airplanes. Now that you often have to pay for meals, people bring their own food on board. DH and I recently ate our Burger King lunch on the plane, but once we opened it up, we realized it was quite aromatic! Oops! Just got me thinking about the food courtesy rules for all such confined spaces...
When we flew a few weeks ago, I got a sandwich for the plane and purposely ordered it with no onions or dressings for this same reason. I didn't want my neighbor to have to smell my sandwich (or, I suppose onion breath afterwards - that was a win/win for him!)
i always bring food on planes...i've been the stinker once with a subway sandwich...the onions were a tad potent
I don't fly out of seatac w/out first stopping for a crab and egg sandwich (morning) or clam chowder (afternoon/evening) from Ivars. 90% of the time I am able to eat before I board, but sometimes the chowder is just too hot or I'm running late and I save it for the plane. Oh-well...
Yup, this is very accurate. Aww, I am sad to hear that there are so many sneakers! I understand that concession prices are high but it's true that most theatres do this just to stay in business. I've worked in theatrical distribution and I know what the profit-sharing arrangements are like--not usually so good for the theatres, especially smaller ones. So, that's where all the popcorn and soda money goes--to keep the theatre afloat so that they can show the movies. I've heard the joke in the industry is that they are not film exhibitors they are candy stores, since that is where most of the profit comes from. I'm not so worried about the Loewses and Regal Theatres and other big multiplex chains, but the next time you go to your local independent/art house/community theatre think about buying a small popcorn, kay?
Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.
We rarely ever go to the movies...maybe 3 or 4 times a year? We normally buy stuff from the theater (soda, popcorn, hot dogs) and, including movie tickets, that's about $40 right there! I haven't gone to the movies since WW, but next time, I'm bringing my own bag of SmartPop, water and other light snacks. I'm confident Brian will still do his part and buy a huge fruit punch, popcorn and hot dog.
When we went to LV last month, I brought a big bag of shredded mini wheats and starlight mints on the plane. It worked out well. I'm always cautious about what I eat prior to and during flights. I really, really don't ever want to "go" in an airplane bathroom.
LOL me too! Ben rolls his eyes, but I'll purposely have a small dinner just so I can stuff myself full of popcorn. I love that stuff!
Oh I can totally believe this. I have no idea how we'll take kids to the movies. At $15 a ticket (there are no special matinee prices here - it's that much $$$ no matter when you go), that's already $30, and with two drinks, popcorn to share and some candy, we're well over $50 for just the two of us. Hence the reason we only go maybe 4 times a year - it's hard to justify spending that much money on a 2 hour event, you know?
I totally get Anna's point about the cost for movie theaters...I guess I don't feel so bad because even though I live in a small town and it's a small theater, it's part of a large nationwide chain, not independent. Is that just me fudging the line?
Thanks for confirming. This will be my excuse for having popcorn every time we go to the movies now!
I don't even think there are independent theaters here in Hawaii, are there? Or does Consolidated count? I totally miss the pizza/beer movie lounges and art house theaters I used to go to on the mainland.
Please, bring on onions and garlic and anything else that's really smelly. It helps cover the gas that so many are silently passing.
We sneak some stuff, like cut up apples or grapes just because it's so hot here, fruit just does it for me at the movies. They should get on the bandwagon and sell fruit (like Disneyland does now). DH still buys popcorn though.
The coolest theater I've ever went to was called the "Brewvies" where you could order a beer and bar food and eat & drink while watching the movie. In all places it was in Salt Lake City Utah! Werid huh?
