What to do with old paint?

How do we dispose of it properly?  We have about 10 cans.

We have a few cans that are nearly full or never used.  Can we donate those?

Re: What to do with old paint?

  • I'm not sure about donating, maybe call Habitat for Humanity?

If not you can dispose of them by mixing with kitty litter.  If you call the sanitation department they can tell you how to do it.  I never knew that until I was on hold trying to cancel my sanitation account and the recording said that you use kitty litter.

  • If you let them sit out and completely dry out, you just throw them in the trash-if you want.  Otherwise, here are some better options:  http://www.wxix.com/Global/story.asp?S=6619671
  • There used to be someplace downtown/OTR that would blend it all together and resell it.  Home Depot sells some stuff to solidify paint but it's not cheap.  I'm pretty sure it's considered hazardous waste if you put liquid paint in the trash.

  • Your local High School drama department or community theatre might be interested in it! They often use donated paint for set design.

  • We got rid of about 20 cans the previous owners left us. We waited for our community trash day, where you can load up your car and drop just about anything off. You do have to prove you live in the township. We live in Anderson.

  • If you can't get your high school drama department to take them (or like my high school, you don't have one), check with the marching band/winterguard. They will definitely get used!
